Default New starter and loud grinding after starting

Replaced my starter and it fires right up but I had a really loud noise that I thought was my belt like a pulley going bad, I tracked it down to my starter. It's a loud rough sound. It's not the squeal of when you try to crank while it's already going. This is a DB electric starter. I did not shim some say you need to shim.

Depends on the year and engine whether it needs shims. Can you help us to help you? Default ATTENTION ALL USER: Please read before posting!!!To all users of CF:

PLEASE, before posting technical questions, take some time to help others out, by adding details in the user control panel. There's 2 ways to do this. First, in the upper left corner on the front page of the site, is a menu button labeled UserCP.

After you click on that you'll see this menu:

Please take the time to click on the highlighted sections and fill out the vehicle information for your vehicle. The signature link is also helpful for any additional information like mods done, links to your build or other vehicles owned.

This helps EVERYONE out by informing them immediately about your year, make, model, etc.

These details are necessary for responders to accurately answer your questions without guessing or having to ask what are the specifics of the vehicle you are referring to. You can add these details easily and permanently by creating a signature or adding your truck details to your existing signature.

5 minutes of your time doing this now will save a ton of time and effort later.

Thanks!!!

Hey yeah should have added that. Its a sotck 1996 xj. Ive changed 2 starters on 2001s and never shimmed. Is shimming at all normal, is it something else, a bad part? Listening to some vids sounds like the gear might not be fully retracting. There is a very fast 'tick' to the rough sound. Anyway, one guy recommended I loosen the bolts slightly, any chance this works? Or whats next step.

Shimming is only on 4 cylinders and old V6s.

I'm betting you have a defective starter.
