Default New Thrush Welded Muffler. FAIL...

I just got done installing my new Thrush welded muffler on my XJ. I had a 4WD Hardware 2.5" catback on there before, with their brand turbo muffler. I was just looking to get a little beefier sound without spending a whole lot. Well, ultimately it was a massive FAIL. The muffler is SUPER loud and I really don't like the sound at all. My old tailpipe section from the 4WDH kit wouldn't match up so the Thrush is just dumping right under the Jeep with a turndown. I don't even think I could carry on a conversation with it like this. Hell, it sounded better when I ran up to the parts store with just the cat and no exhaust at all. Looks like I'm spending the next hour or two putting the old junk back in there. All this with a broken ankle and on crutches, damn. What a day!

I may end up just getting a Dynomax Ultraflow instead, but I'm not too keen on dropping another 90 bucks on this project. The Thrush was not available in the center inlet/offset outlet at any of the stores around here, only in the opposite configuration. And it's not reversible. So I guess I'm off to get the Dynomax now, I'll let you know how it goes!

Sounds nice low tone, not too loud, not too quiet either.

I have the dynomax on my XJ and it sounds pretty good. Not super loud but it has a nice deep tone.

The warlock is nice. I had one on my dakota, nice tone and not much drone for a chambered muffler. Nice cuz you can pull the flow intensifier out and run your exhaust open.

Yeah, it royally sucked. I ended up just pulling it off. I was getting pretty frustrated at that point by the whole situation that I just clamped a 90 degree bend I had lying around onto the cat and put a chrome tip onto that for now. It exits just in front of the rear wheel and it sounds like a mean *** tractor. It's ultra loud and in all honesty it sounds like crap but it'll work for this evening till I can relax and put some time into fitting a dynomax tomorrow. I was even considering a Cherry Bomb or Thrush glasspack, but nobody seems to carry them around here.

Anybody use the Dynomax UltraFlow? Seems to be a bit superior to the turbo as it flows straight through instead of in that wierd S-shaped path that a turbo has. Dunno how it would sound either...

I love the sound of my Thrush Welded muffler. Sounds pretty damn good to me. I have a 2.5" hi-flow cat and 2.5" tail pipe.

You know, that sounds pretty nice dudeinanxj. Thats the kind of sound I was going for actually. I'm thinking the reason I hated it so much was because it was exiting under the jeep, and I couldn't stand the resonance in the cab. I have a 2 1/4" high flow cat and a 2 1/2" tailpipe. The muffler just wouldn't line up with my tailpipe due to the offset problem. I'm thinking that you are getting a much more satisfying sound by having the tailpipe actually exiting where it should. It your Thrush a center inlet/offset output one? Because the auto store here said all the ones they had were offset in/center out, which just doesn't work.

Im sorry to hear that man. Mine sounds good on my ranger and my jeep. Both welded Thrush Mufflers. I hope you find the one with the sound you want.

Well I just got home from the parts store a little while ago, I got the Dynomax UltraFlow. I already pulled my little side exit off the cat gimmick off and I'm just taking a quick CF break before i go and put it all back together again. It was quite a bit more spendy than a Thrush, so I hope it turns out well. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

I had these on my 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with headers and 4.5 inch exhaust tips and they sounded pretty good. They got better as they burnt out a little but...eventually I couldnt take it and picked up some cherry bombs...muscle cars gotta be loud.

Ok so I finished installing the UltraFlow a little while ago and it went rather well. I ended up removing my tow bar and running it out the side behind the rear passenger wheel. I've been meaning to remove the towbar for awhile as I never use it and it hangs down real far and drags sometimes offroad. The exhaust sounds PERFECT, exactly what I was going for. Just a little more beef in the exhaust note than the 4WDH cheapo turbo muffler that used to be in there, without being to loud or intrusive. I'm very satisfied with the sound quality as well as the build quality, it made the 4WDH muffler look so cheap. It's fully welded and very sturdy, so I'm hopin it'll hold up off the pavement! I'll try to get a sound clip and post it up soon.
