New to the world of Jeeps and looking for an XJ? Any tips?
Hi everyone,
my name is Chris. I live in So Cal and have been looking for an XJ that I can use for short distance deliveries for my business as well fix up and take on the trails. I have found a 99 Cherokee Sport 4x4 with a 4.5" procomp lift and only 34000 miles for only $6000. Does that seem like a good deal? Are there are things I need to look out for? Are there any years that are more desireable/undesireable than others?
I'm new to Jeeps so I was just wondering if there are certain things I need to look out for. I'm really looking forward to getting into the Jeep World and do some offroading. I currently have an 03 GMC crew cab diesel 4x4 that I love taking offroad, but there are just certain trails that it won't fit on. Plus it's time to go it a rest from the hard offroading I put it through.
Thanks for the help.

It would be really helpful if you could send us some pics of the work that was done so that we can take a look to see if it was good or not. A jeep can be ruined with the wrong work done to it.

If the 99 really has 34,000 miles on it I would say hell ya that is a deal. Check it out good. What did this Cherokee do the last 10 years that would be what I want to know because that is only an average of 3,400 miles a year.
Do a carfaq vehicle history report if that is clean hell yeah pick it up. Car is still like new. IMO if it has been well maintained it would be like buying a 05 grand Cherokee or liberty. Because they will have the same amount of mileage on em.
You will find wheeling an XJ a entirely different exp. form your Chevy.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to call the guy today to get the VIN to verify the carfax history. The current owner is an older gentlemen and he gave me a brief history on the car yesterday. Basically about 3 years ago his Father-in-law passed away and they inherited his Jeep. When the got it, it only had 7000 miles on it. His father-in-law only drove it a few miles each year when he got it and then wasn't able to drive the last few years of his life because of his health. The current owner's wife has been driving it for 3 years to and from work which is 100 miles round trip so they bought a car that got better gas mileage and are selling this one. It has a Procomp 4.5" front and 3.5" rear lift, new wheels/tires, and a new stereo. The thing that really grabbed my attention was the mileage and overall condition. He swears it's perfect so it is worth the 4hr drive to go see it. I'm going to do a one way car rental tomorrow morning to go check it out.

I just ran the VIN on carfax and it was clean. two owners, just like I was told. I called the Jeep dealer to check to see what kind of rear end and transfer case it had and I was told it has the 231 transfer case and a Chrysler 8.25" rear end. Not sure on the rear if that's good or not, but I heard the transfer case is pretty good.
Leaving in the morning to go get it. (hopefully)
thanks for all of the tips and help.

8.25 Cryco rear is pretty stout. Would be my second choice after a D44 but yhat's just me. You have found a jewel in the rough Z75146

i think hes trying to say that when he off-roads his xj, it will fit anywhere a quad(atv) will. im no stickler on internet grammar(i usually dont use capitals and punctuation for speed), but i must say wicked's posts are hard to decipher sometimes......
as for the OP, sounds like you found a jewel. please keep us posted after you look at it/pick it up.

That was my thought about what he said but I knew that no one would try to put their XJ where a quad would normally go. That would ruin the quad trails and give Jeepers a bad name. So there must be another explanation!!!
