Yeah you are good on the filter. The best filters for our XJ's are the Mopar, Wix and Napa Gold. If you are lucky it will only be the head gasket. But, as you already know your year has the crappy 0331 head. So have you drained the oil from it yet? If so how does it look? Have you done any of the test to confirm that the head is your problem?

We're not crying about it. And we're not offended.

We're just calling you on giving bad advice.

Well put.
I was going to say the same thing. But maybe not as delicate as you did. So, I figured that I better just leave it alone.

No, I haven't done any tests yet. Just running on evidence; low to no oil pressure when hot, drinks a quart of coolant in 20 miles, looks like Vaseline under the oil fill cap, cleaned sludge from sender and passage, replaced sender, white steam and water leaking from tailpipe, no external coolant leaks found, radiator new pointing to an overheating situation in the recent past. Planning on doing a compression test to rule the head gasket in or out. We'll see....

I'm not trying to be brutal, but I predict you are going to end up replacing or rebuilding the whole engine.

Or sell the Jeep as is.

Ha! LOL thought about that several times. It's in good shape otherwise though so if it needs, I'll probably put in a new motor.

you could just find a new 4.0 on CL. I see them all the time in my area, sometimes for only 200 bucks in good running shape.
