Default Newb question about ignition

Hey everyone I'm a complete noob.. never had a jeep or an AMC before and I'm stoked to have it... I do however have a massive problem... my ignition cuts out randomly or I think its the ignition anyway when this happens my tach drops to nothing or almost nothing and my shift light comes on.. problem seems to be mostly when I'm doing a consistant speed... I have checked for vacuum leaks.. rotten wires/ grounds from underhood to ECU... even the documented service bulletin about having to cut the set tab off of the distrubuter to eliminate cross firing... anybody have any idea what I'm dealing with here? this is seriously the only multi port fuel injected vehicle I've ever worked on and I am lost.. If it were OBD II instead of OBD I I might have a chance the scan tool I have access to doesn't have the diagnostic port adaptor for my cherokee so I am screwed on that front.. also cannot locate a check engine light??? Anyone help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated P.S. this is not the GM style HEI igntion it's the Chrysler one

The check engine light should come on with the ignition until the engine starts. Could be a burnt bulb. On my 95 XJ to retrieve the codes you trn the ignition on, off, on, off then on without starting the check engine light will flash stored codes to reset the computer you touch the posative battery wire to ground for 30 seconds to discharge the capacitor in the computer.

To my knowledge there is no check engine light on mine or I don't know where it is and it's burnt out.. checked the bank of warning lights to the left of the gauge cluster there isn't a check engine.. only an emissions maintenece light. is the check engine on the cluster because if so It's burned out... as for the igniton wire I'll check that out.. looks good at the distributor...
