Default Newbie Cherokee Owner here with Questions

Good Day all,

I have just aquired a 1987 Cherokee 4.0, 5-speed manual, 2 door. This Jeep had been sitting around for almost a year before I got it, so I am trying to get it in shape for Maryland Inspection. I have done some work on it and have gotten some of the items on the list checked off, but a couple of items are giving me fits. They are:

1) Backup lights switch. The backup lights do not come on when I go into reverse. I have checked the bulbs and fuses. Any idea where the switch is located? The transmission is the Comanche AX15 transmission. I say this because it was changed before I got the Jeep and thought it may alter the location.

2) The horn is either missing or doesn't work. Where should it be located?

I do have the shop manual on order and I am waiting for it to come in. But I am a little impatient and would like to get these things taken care of soon.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeff, welcome to the forum from Fantic.
1) According to the year (1987), your manual transmission should be the five speed Peugeot BA-10, that has been swapped with the five speed Aisin AX-15 you have now.(much better, don't worry)
Probably the switch wires have not been attached back to it because the plug is different.
Check around the tranny for hanging wires.

2)The horns (two) are situated in the lower front corners, behind the grille panel over the engine splash. If you remove the splash with your hands you will see them.

Thanks so much guys....just got the Cherokee through the state inspection. Now we start on the cosmetics and comfort stuff.

The biggest problem turned out to be the steering damper...so I had the inspection station change that. Got my inspection sheet and off to the MVA to complete registration.

Again Thanks.
