Newbie gauge cluster swap question.
1998 SE 2 door I6 5 speed.
Getting ready to purchase a gauge cluster and swap out my idiot light one. The only question I have after reading piles of posts is...... I have a 5 speed and the cluster I have now has the upshift light. Does it matter if the replacement cluster came out of an automatic? From what I can tell it does not matter but I hate to pay good money only to find I bought the wrong one. I could care less about not having the upshift light. I really just want real gauges for oil and temp. Thanks.

I just replaced my gauge cluster with one that has the tach. I already had all the other gauges and it plugged right in. I'm sure you already know that you'll have to replace your temp and oil sending units with ones for gauges instead of idiot lights. Make sure you tell the parts monkeys that you have gauges and not the lights. Went through three sending units for my temp gauge before I finally got the right one and each time I told them I had the gauge. PITA. Now I don't remember if the donor vehicle I got my cluster from was an automatic but I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. I now have the tach and my up shift light still works also. The whole idea behind the upshift light was to tell you when to shift to get the best M.P.G.

From what I know as long as the year is correct it does not matter if it comes from a auto or 5spd but in the auto cluster you have to put the bulb in for the shift light it is not present in the automatic cluster.. Just transfer over the bulb from your 5spd cluster for the shift light and it should light up from what I know hope this helps have a good day post pics of your swap that would be great
