Newbie question: whine at rear end when turning
Hi XJ specialists,
I hope you don't mind a newbie asking what is surely an old question, but I have not been able to find the right thread giving me the answer...
I just treated myself to a 1995 Limited SE 4.0 HO RHD (UK version) with only 58k miles and a reasonably good history.
It runs very well without any noises, unless I do tight turns, e.g. coming round the corner into my street or driveway. Then I get a whining sound at the rear the stops as soon as I am coming out of the tightest part of the turn. I assume this is some rear diff issue and would very much appreciate any suggestion about how to diagnose and tackle this.
I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know the type of my rear axle, the car is a 95 with SelecTrac and Tow package, I don't see any limited slip switches or anything ;-)
Thanks for your help
Andreas

If it has the tow package it may have a LSD in it and the clutches are a tad noisey. Change the rear gear lube and check for a clutch pack inside. If it has one when you refill make sure you put the friction modifier in or the cluch pack will wear out prematurely.

Andreas I am not sure. Someone on here works for a Jeep dealrship and can run your vin to tell if you have the LSD or not. Post up a seperate thread to inquire if someone has the capability to check VIN for all options.
