newer radiator install in 88 xj info needed
Ok I have a 88 xj with the 4.0 and the radiator is shot. I posted on here before about upgrading to one out of a new or newer. So I'm double checking before I rip it apart, I need to lose the fill tank I have now and get a overflow. And then I can run the hoses from the fire wall to the engine. And then a small hose from fill neck of new radiator to overflow. Is this correct? I was just going to run new lines fron heater core to engine and eliminate the mumbo jumbo it has now.

just remove the hoses from the heater core to the motor and run new hose getting rid of the valves all together and plug the cvacuum line

I have a renix cherokee and I have a newer radiator out of a cherokee that I would put in it but it has the plastic sides on it and I really don't like them never had any luck with them. Does ur radiator have platic sides on it and has anyone had any problems with these radiators I would like 2 have the bigger one but don't want 2 waste my time if I'm going 2 have 2 be replacing it in 6 months

Any poorly maintained 10+ year old vehicle is prone to overheating and nothing lasts forever. $80,000 Escalades leave the factory with plastic tanks on the rads......must not be too bad.
Pick any old car forum, for the next 4-5 months overheating will be the number one subject on the forum. When cooler weather arives again, the number one subject will be "my heater doesn't work". Overheating, no heat, either way it's usually due to poor maintenance, not plastic rad tanks.....regardless of what vehicle it is.

I agree with u but just for my personal preference I would like to find one with metal sides on it instead of plastic if one our jeeps run hott its usualy not from poor maintenace of the cooling system its from standing on the skinny peddal too hard

baxj89, the sides blew out of my plastic POS stock 91 XJ radiator right in the middle of a trip from Wa. state to Cali. I scotch taped and bailing wired it together and ran the whole way with the heater on high to make it to Cali. As soon as I got there, I did a little research online and found CFS Radiator. They are actually well known for making HD radiators for hi performance rice rockets but, they make a 3 core radiator that is a stock replacement for the Jeep XJ and it is "ALL METAL". That and switching to a 185 degree T-stat fixed my overheating problems. I can even crawl trails in Cali and Nevada in the middle of summer with no worries, now.
