Default No compression after new gasket

Hi everyone

On my XJ 1998 2.5L. I replaced the head gasket and had the head skimmed (made flat again). But yet I have been told by a garage that it's gone again. But what is odd is that I'm also getting no fuel in cylinder 1.

Any ideas people? :-)

Thanks for reading.

???

How long ago did you replace the head/gasket?

How much did they take off of the head?

How do you know you aren't getting fuel to that cylinder?

What were the results of the compression test?

What makes the shop think the heads gone?

No fuel is one problem.

No compression is another.

If the head gasket was really done properly, you have deeper problems than that. I would get a firm diagnosis on that before I went any further.

Might be time for a used replacement engine, or a total rebuild on yours if it can be rebuilt.

Well I'm going to try a few other garages to get second opinion.
It drives and runs fine but it only running on 3 cylinders. The guy I took it to wasn't there and not back till monday so I'll get results then for that.
Head gasket and skim was done a month ago. Because I was unemployed for so long I had to carry out work myself. But that was ok I followed it to the manual and I'm a trained mechanic on all the basics and repairs. But this had be really baffled.
Think engine replacement would be ideal. Could always make it a little project as my new job only walking distance at the moment. I think I could handle it replacing the engine. Might opt for a 4.0. Seen a few on eBay cheap enough. :-)

Oh and the no fuel problem was told to me by a guy at work who has some mechanical knowledge. And we tested the spark plugs by pulling leads one at a time. The leads and plugs are all new aswell. The spark is there but the plug was very sooty compared to the other 3.

Well may be able to get hold of a cheap wrangler 4.0 manual tranny.

But all this aside. I had a thought.

Head bolts stretched from when the head first warped. I'm such an idiot. So another new gasket and some head bolts. I've not really driven it for it to warp again as it don't let it get that hot.

I'd try a fresh set of bolts and new gasket first. When I changed mine I used some copper spray which fills any tiny lines or imperfections.

If the plug is sooty, that usually indicates that plug is not firing. Carbon fouled. Try pulling and grounding that plug against the block. You should have a nice, fat blue spark.

I have seen plenty of bad plugs in my time. Even if they are almost new.

I hope they're not Champions.
