Default no Evap. Canister in my 87. What should I do ?

Hi,

I found out that there is no tube plugged in the airbox, where the one of the app. canister should be.
So there is a .. hole.

The PO removes the line + the Evap. Canister.

As all what the PO did on the car was stupid, I wonder what I should check.
Should I verify something on the tank side ? Like a line has been properly cut.

Should I just refill the hole on the airbox ?

Thanks

I found this old answer. It seems very preferable to re-install a canister.
I just called the nearby JY (around Paris, Fr) but none have an XJ.
So it might be difficult to redo the original system.

- Shall I fill the hole in the airbox ? (the one supposed to go to the canister)
- be sure the line is cut on the tank side (or leave it open precisely to vent the tank) *
- find a vented cap ? mine is stock (any recommandation for a 87 XJ Wagoneer 4L)

* I wonder if there isn't a line from the tank with a one way valve around the fuel filter. Maybe the previous owner did install one on purpose ?

Does it make sense to drive a bit without cap to see if it makes a difference ?

A canister from a ZJ will work the same way or any vehicle for that matter. What it does is vent the tank thru charcoal that retains the vapors, but allows air to replace the fuel used. On initial startup, the canister is purged of accumulated vapor that gets burned with the intake charge like the crankcase vent system and is controlled by a purge solenoid. The hose to the airbox supplies clean filtered air to the canister for the purge. Some systems just have a filter in the bottom of the canister for this air supply.
