wow. thanks bigins18, you called me a pre madonas. this is why I waited YEARS to join a forum, because I get called names for my opinions.... LOOK at my rigs you fool...
Since we're striking nerves, here's what I really think. NO FLARES looks cheap. Like you cant spend the $$$ to buy cut-out flares. I've got cut-outs on all 3 of my trail rigs.

Flareless XJ's would look awesome if the fender edges were rolled, (you know, like almost every vehicle ever made), but they're not, and that sharp edge looks "unfinished" and unattractive.

Guess mine's gonna look cheap because cut-outs wouldn't last one trip the way I wheel. Plastic flares, oem or aftermarket tend to break and or bust on the trail unless you ride mud only or wide open spaces without a tree rock or any other obsticle in site. Like stated before it's a prefrence thing and not everyone is going to agree. I think a jeep covered with dents, full widths and really aggressive tires looks great and don't care for shinny paint jobs and tires covered in armor all but I'm sure others are just the opposite. You might think mine looks like a pos but on the trail looks are secondary and that's what mine is for. I got a nice car to drive on the street.

Well, don't quit the forum because one guy is rude. The rest of us value your contribution - and I happen to agree with you. I like flares, practical or not, they look good and I like my stuff to look good. There's no shame in pride of ownership and attention to detail.
As for prima donnas, Diesel is correct...he had the wrong context and can't speel.

I have been wheeling my whole life. My gramps had a 64 *****'s that I rode in as a tot and my whole family drives jeeps of one sort or another. I do not think that my opinion is in any way more valueable than another, but I typically do not favor the "do whatever makes you happy" mindset either. I take a lot of pride in my rigs and my ability to wheel and spot for newbies. There is a purpose to evry single MOD to each rig. Some fer looks and some fer function. In my final opinion, I like to have my drivers window down. Without flares, I'm constantly eating mud. I don't "mud-ride" because I'm a climber, but there is always mud...
True, flares get broken. I have broken probably 5 or 6 on my TJ and 2 of Rusty's "unbreakable" on my 90 XJ. The mud slinger aspect is of such high importance to me that I always replace them.
I completely understand being on a budget. I sacrafice a lot of other things that ppl have in order to fund my wheeling obsession. I will just about sell body parts to keep my rigs running. I try very hard to never go out without my equipment in tip top. I have had to walk probably a hundred miles in my life from getting stuck and having to hike out to get another vehicle.
Long answer. Sry. I hope that my opinions are not offensive to any readers. If they are, I appologize...

So what exactly is wrong with the "do whatever makes you happy mindset"? That is exactly what I do. I didn't build my rig to make everyone else happy, it's built for me the way I want it, or at least close to what I want.

I'll be adding TJ flares to mine this winter after building a front bumper. Granted, they're not the prettiest mod, but they still give you flares (VA requires tire coverage) and they look good if done right IMO.
I tend to stick with the "whatever makes you happy" slogan, but add to it, "as long as it's legal and safe for you and others". I do think that every mod should have a purpose to it, but that's me. Not everyone on here hates mall crawlers and some people do it just for the looks. I personally don't think you should mod something unless you plan on using it, but again, that's MY opinion (and a lot of others on here), not everyone's.
With that said, do what you want. If you wanna keep flares, keep 'em. If you need bigger ones, fork over the $$ for Bushwackers, go middle of the road with Rusty's, or find a nice set of TJ's for cheap. They all work. In fact, I've even seen guys use the black, plastic yard trim stuff to make 'em. Like I said, do what you want as long as it's safe and legal.

I'm not suggesting that you invest as much money in your rigs as I have mine, but at least try to generate enough thought as to why someone like me might post in the way I did. In case you haven't looked me up, I own 3 jeeps and the bank lets me drive a 4th. I've bought and sold 6 others in the past 3 years. I have installed over 5 lifts for my fellow jeepers in the last year and I am on most cell phones as the local "recovery guy."
So howse bout you keep your thread opinions to the question asked and get off my back about my opinions.
I couldn't care less of you drive a flippin zuki... I was expressing my opinion on flares. I have them and always will. I think rigs without them look unfinished and cheap. I have probably spent like 1200 on flares on my jeeps buying them new and then having to replace the broken ones...

I like the look of flares- that is why I still have 31s on 4.5" of lift. I am tempted to go bigger but can't justify the price of the flares. I may make some tube flares, but for now I am happy on my 31s- especially since my YJ just got a new set of 35s.
My wife was probably right though, when I got the new big meats for the YJ she said now I will want bigger tires on the other Jeep (XJ), because they look so small.
If I find a steal of a deal on some 33s I suppose the sawzall will have to come out...
Cheers!
