Made some progress today!

Found out that the hi-beams work when the dimmer switch flasher is activated. Looks like I can rule out having a bad dimmer switch.

Finally was able to get the air filter box out of the way so I could access the power connector underneath it but I tried every which way and was not able to get it to separate. What is the secret?

I have not been able to find a headlight relay in the relay/fuse box on the passenger side of the engine but when the wife operates the dimmer switch flasher for me I can hear a click coming from the fog light relay.

Could someone please give me a link for a headlight wiring diagram for this car (98 Cherokee Sport), thanks.

you should also be able to get a wiring diagram if you just do a google search. I used to have one but lost it when my computer crashed.

Stock fogs go off when the brights are on, so if they are on when you hit the brights that would make sense on why the fog relay would be clicking.

I'll have to dig around and see if I can find my xj fsm...

Thanks to you all for the replies but so far I've not found what I need. What I really need at this point is the color code of the connector wiring underneath the air filter box so I can find the hot wire going to the hi-beams. From my testing it appears that the dimmer switch is OK and the bulbs are OK so if my theory is correct my guess is that I will find that power is getting up to this connector but not going thru it to the bulbs. Can you help me with the color coding of the hi-beam hot wire? Many thanks.

I did this when I was having voltage problems at my headlights. They were really dim from the voltage being low. Not sure if doing this will fix your issue.

Two things that I badly need: (1998 Cherokee Sport)

Wire color code for the connector underneath the air filter box and suggestions on how to separate that FREAKIN connector!!!!!! Thanks.

Pleas note that this connector on my '98 is not the same as the one pictured previously by TURBO XJ. Mine has more wires than his.

white wire should be high beams--it's marked "wht" on the diagram I am looking at....the low beam is marked "LT green" on my diagram.

the white wire goes from the headlight dimmer switch to the left headlight, then from the left headlight to the right headlight. So Start at the left headlight

if the blue "high beam" light is lighting up when you hit the switch, then the culprit is the white wire from the left headlight to the dimmer switch. According to the diagram the "high beam" dash indicator on the dash is also a white wire and is connected at the same location on the dimmer switch as the white wire from the left headlight. So white wire from left headlight to dimmer switch.

also thinking out loud--if the connection of the white wires at the dimmer switch is bad it would cause issues. I don't know what that connector looks like....also bad grounds can cause weird issues. Make sure the grounds are solid on both headlights.

Many thanks for the info you posted. If possible could you send a link for this wiring diagram? Thanks for the diagram that you drew. Only one problem.....I just went out to the car to look for that white wire coming from the dimmer switch and found nothing. Looks to me like Jeep changed the wiring on the '98. The key to this dilemma, I feel sure, is inside that SOB connector under the air filter box that I have not been able to separate. There are 14 wires going into it and the same number coming out of it, some of which have to be supplying power to the headlights. If I knew the color coding of these wires I think I could find the answer to my problem and be able to splice in a new wire to the high beams. I will make a new effort to separate this blasted connector by grabbing each end of it with two channel lock type pliers to see if I can pull it apart. Sure would save a lot of work if I just knew the color of the dimmer switch wire going into that rats-a-frats connector.

Do you mean that the high beams work when the hazard flasher is on? If so I would think its the multi function switch. There are three switches in it but the are all in one unit. Last one I had to bad signals still worked and so did flashers. in that case I had no low beams unless I wiggled the lever around and found the right spot. Sometimes I would have no lights until I wiggled the lever. Lol. Sounds like when you slide the flasher switch over to activate them it somehow makes the high beam switch work because of the position it's in.
