A couple more questions:
If I have to replace parts should I purchase the whole starter or just the solenoid?
If I can just clean it up... I was consulting that starter cleaning guide above and it mentions greasing the gearbox in the starter, how would i do that? just plop it in there and shove it around the gears with my fingers? thanks

The gears aren't what's messing the starter up, it's the oil on the wires in the cap.

-Reverse lights do work. I guess it wouldn't hurt to clean out the neutral switch anyway.
-Hitting the starter a couple times did work. I tried this a few times and it worked each time, though i dont know if thats just a coincedence.
I live in an apartment, so id have to take my car to a friends house to work on it, which is why im lagging on trying to take anything apart yet. I've read up on changing ignition switches, starters, and nss switches and I'm thankful that none of them seem to be too difficult to do myself.
