No start! Has Power! There is a Click for starter!
Hello friends! I am new to using this platform but I do need help!
I have a 98 XJ and I have Zero power! I have checked the battery its not a bad battery. Bought a new Alternator and new starter and both work. The alternator does charge the Jeep but it does take forever! After that if and when it does charge you can hear a click of the starter so it isn't the starter. Did a code check and did get a code P1694 and I tried to do some wire chancing with a multimeter but I don't know exactly what I am doing so... but I did try. Check my fuses and none blown. I took off all my ground wires, cleaned then, and put them back. Still nothing! I bought her back on March 14, 2022. I have replaced the thermostat twice, fuel pump, Crankshaft sensor, water pump, new belt, replaced the transmission cooling system, idler belt tightener, and the headlights.
There was nothing that signaled me to a direction on where to go. Drove it down to a smoke shop was running beautiful and then we come out 10 mins latter and nothing. Please help if possible!
I do have videos that they wont let me post of my trying to start the Jeep this is what She looks like
This photo was taken before changing water pump, new belt, the transmission cooling system, and idler belt tightener.
If you're hearing a click and it's not turning over, then it's either the starter or the power cable running to it from the battery. The click you hear is the solenoid on the starter, a big relay basically... It's possible that the power cable is bad, and the motor can't pull enough current to turn over, but it's just as likely that the starter needs serviced. Most just replace it, but they can be rebuilt if you're so inclined.
Thank you for you advice Jim! Ended up doing a drop test in the battery. Figured out it was a bad connection with the positive terminal. (It was pretty bad from previous owner) so swapped out both and she’s running now!
A word of caution. Exposed copper wires will corrode and fail eventually. Closed-end, tinned-copper lugs, adhesive-lined heat shrink and military-style battery terminals are my preferred route, but Liquid Electrical Tape will also get you pretty far...
