Noise when reversing
I have a 98 XJ with about 129,000 miles on it, and it makes a sort of moaning sound when I reverse. Mechanic says not to worry about it, but I can't help it. Anyone have a similar experience?

is it more of a whine (wine)?? reverse gears usually make a different noise from forward gears due to the way they mesh with one another.. if thats what you are refereing too. they are a straight cut geat opposed to a helical cut gear (forward gear, quieter).

If by whine you mean a sharp, high pitched sound, then no. It's more of a hollow moaning sound. And it's only been making this noise for about 7 or 8 months, and I've had the car for almost 3 years.

That is by no means normal, as CPCP is somewhat implying. Mine definitely doesn't do that. I'm not too experienced with transmissions though, so hopefully someone else can chime in.
