Non-Starter. Probably fuel starvation
Hello all,
I have just picked up my first Jeep, and need some advice. It's a 1993 Cherokee which was destined for the scrap yard, but I pursuaded the current owner to pass it on to me for free.
The vehicle hasn't turned a wheel for almost 4 years, but appears to be in excellent shape considering. I completed all obvious tasks such as replacing engine oil & coolant, as well as checking tyres and brakes. The vehicle then started on the 8th or 9th crank, and ran for about 5 minutes before it died. The owner said the fuel gauge was inop but on taking a jerry can to the petrol station and filling it up, the gauge is now reading just under a quarter tank (I know I should have checked fuel level prior to starting, but forgot).
Since adding the fuel, the vehicle will not start. Battery is good and engine is cranking. I have removed the fuel line and following a good suck plenty of fuel appeared (can of coke required immediately after!!!). However, vehicle still wouldn't start. I have tried to pour fuel directly into the fuel rail, and into the air intake, but still won't start. If I crank the engine without the fuel line fitted, no fuel is pumped out of the end.
Unfortunately, I presently know very little about Jeeps (I am on day 3 of ownership), so could do with some help. I live in the Middle East, and maintenance manuals do not exist over here. My initial questions are:
1: Does a '93 Cherokee have a fuel pump, of does it flow via an engine vacuum?
2: If there is a fuel pump should I be able to here it, and is there an access point through to the pump without removing the tank?
3: Is it likely I have an air-lock in the fuel rail, and if so, what is procedure to remove?
4: Is this a problem anyone else has seen? If so, what did you do to cure?
The fact the car did run for a while make me think it simply ran out of fuel, or that the pump has failed (if it has one). The car is definitely worth saving as general condition is very good, but only if it can be done on a budget. Any advice would be very welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Tony

Rather annoyed!
Thank you very much all!!!!
I think I'll just let the bloody thing go to the scrap yard, as initial experience of owners support has been thoroughly disapointing........
My question has been relegated to the 4th page, and no-one has even had the commom decency to say 'welcome'. I will not be logging on to this site again, but wish you and your vehicles the very best.

Well, welcome to the site, we usually do welcomes in the introduction area, but hiya!
As for the problem here's the answers to your questions:
1) the 93's have an electrical pump in the tank...
2) it depends, sometime you can hear them energize/prime, some you can hear run, just kinda depends on your pump.
3) If there is an air bubble in the fuel rail, it should pump itself out in the return line, if not, there is a Schrader valve you can bleed to knoc.
4) I've never had a problem even close to this, maybe someone has..
