Default Northern XJ

Hello from sunny Florida.
I am looking at buying my first XJ and have found a 2000 sport at a local dealer that I think I can get at a decent price. 4.0, 231 transfer, 8.25" rear, and only 72K miles.

The part that scares me is that it spent life in Michigan for the last 9 years. Where should I look for rust and how much can I expect on a well maintained XJ?

Thanks,
Milton

Hey Milton! Welcome to CF from Dan in Tenn.! Rockers and floors usually show rust first. Check it out from underneath.

usually rust can be pretty bad up there from salt damage but i would look in the usual spots look under it check the frame where everything mounts like leaf springs stuff like that, check floor pans, and areas where you think mud and water would build up

Default test drive it!

Go test drive it and while the salesman is in the jeep with ya stomp the floor really hard, if your foot goes through he might knock the price down!!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I am hoping the dealership will let me take it overnight to check it out. I don't expect a pristine vehicle, but I don't want to get a money pit either.

Any other problems I should look for?

one thing i would look at is the rear shock mounts... they suck when they are rusted. being what it is with that many miles i would buy it no matter what if i had the $$$
