NP 242 Oil Pick up tube & Rebuild
I bought a 98 Jeep Cherokee Limited this past year and was told the NP242 T-case was shot. I finally pulled the T-case this week. The oil pick up had dislodged, made it into the gears, got chewed up and caused the chain to pop off. The magnet was completely covered in shavings and it looks like the chain might have lightly eaten away at a few spots near the bolt holes on the case. Gears all seem to be in good shape. I have a couple of question to bounce off anyone who has rebuilt one before(this will be my first time).
1. Any idea where to find an oil pick up tube for a NP 242? I searched the web for a hour with no luck this evening.
2. Is it best to go ahead and replace all bearings given the metal shavings?
Thanks!-ET

Go here:
https://www.moparpartsgiant.com/
Enter the values for your XJ. The look through the parts guide to find the part you need. Sometimes they are still available from Mopar. Otherwise, you'll have the part number to search on.
However, some parts can only be sourced in salvage yards but you may find them on eBay and other "marketplace" sites.

Its generally best to obtain a spare 242.
In your situation a working one out of a wreck could be swapped right in
If its not working, it would probably still be ok for the parts you need
My 242 with 250k miles is sickly, and I am in the process of swapping one of the 2 spare 242 I have in
One came up for sale 5min down the road, bloke said it was stuffed, he was offended when I offered him $30 (already had my 2 spares)
It was soley for the purpose of parts and fully learn how to dismantle, that is how I prefer to learn, not on mine
I said, well ring me if you want the $, bet the **** chucked it out from pure spite, fkn spiteful ****

Yeah I've been on the hunt for a spare for the last several months but I haven't been able to source one locally. Debating on snagging one off Ebay but was trying to avoid the $500 for a used one I'm going to have to break down to put in another SYE.

Just a follow up... I just finished the rebuild. I was able to source the pickup tube from cobra transmission. Link is attached: https://cobratransmission.com/np242j...ube-55023073-1
