Did you look on the driver's side visor?

Do you have an XJ or a full sized Jeep?

the 229 is pretty easy to operate. I find the best way is to roll forward at about 3-5 mph, then shift the trans into neutral. While still rolling, pull the tcase lever to engage, and then shift the trans back into gear. Same process for disengaging

IIRC, the 229 was vacuum operated between 2 and 4wd......

Lever for high or low range

And possibly only in full size Cherokee/Wagoneers.

I could be wrong.

Well, it's not an ELECTRONIC vacuum switch, it's a vacuum switch. Does it have a little spring loaded pin you have to pull to engage 4wd ?

I know it's a switch. Do you have to stop and pull a little know down in order to slide the vacuum switch lever or not?

all 229's I've seen are vacuum operated, and that switch has to be engaged first, before the rest of the stuff. I figured the OP already did that, but couldn't figure how to get it shifted after that. The vacuum diaphragm engages 4wd, and the lever just selects the range.

I'm not sure he has that figured out yet.

You are correct. Engage 4wd using the vacuum switch, then leave it in High, or use the lever to shift to Low range.

I can't remember which transfer case were shift ono the fly and which weren't in the 22X series. The vacuum switch having a pin/**** that must be pulled first helps determine which one it is and what method is used.

Then you can shift it any any legal speed from 2wd to 4wd and back again. If you desire 4 Low, you must have first shifted into 4wd. Then, come to a stop, put the trans in Neutral, and pull the lever to the Low range position.
