Dropped my TC off at the trans shop. The mechanic said he thought the chain is too tight too, the master rebuilder is supposed to take a look at it and let me know something in a day or so.

AAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I was right, the chain is too tight. Now this douche that has my tc says that labor is looking like $190 just for telling me that! So now I have to buy a new chain, try to get this insane labor charge reduced, deal with the headache of returning the chain and getting a defect credit, and still put the case back together myself. Buy the time I get this thing back together I would have been better off buying a rebuilt case and actually having a warranty.

Most reputable shops only charge around $100 per hour... and all they did was check to see if the chain was to tight..
Without adding R&R I'v rebuilt rzr transmission/tcases in less time then 2hr's, and from what I'v seen the np231 looks MUCH simpler. Theres no way in hell a quick look at a chain should take near 2 hr's.

morriss shows 2 chains 30 and 31 link....http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-tr...-231-parts.htm
Morris is my problem now, I bought the 31 link which is the same number of links as the orginal but the thing is tight as a banjo string. The only thing I can figure is that the new chain is somehow defective. The shop that I dropped the case off at is a satellite shop for the place that actually rebuilds trannys and such about 35 miles away. When I dropped it off the mechanic/transmission installer said that hte chain looked tight, the foreman of the shop was supposed to send the case to the main shop to have the rebuilder look at it. So here is the time line. Monday dropped off at satellite shop 11:30 am, Tuesday foreman calls me at 4:30 pm and asked if I could bring my old chain up there so they could compare them (I'm assuming that my case is already at the home shop) Wednesday my wife drops off my old chain at the satellite shop at 11:00 am Thursday I call satellite shop at 4:00 pm checking on my case foreman informs me that my parts have just arrived at the main shop and that indeed my chain is too short. Ok great so I ask him to get me a price on a chain from his distributor, and asked what the damage was looking like for inspecting the chain. This douche bag replies oh about $190 my instant reply was WTF! Then he says that his mechanic (installer guy mentioned before) had 2hrs labor on it trying to reassemble the case. Again WTF? So trying extremely hard to keep my cool I ask when I could just come get my parts and he said he'd have to call the home shop and call me back. Well now it's 5:30 pm and no phone call.
Think I'm gonna take tomorrow off work and go to the main shop and talk to whomever runs the show and get this B.S. straightend out. Come Sat. I will have owned my jeep for three weeks and only got to drive it home. This sucks!

Well, after a good word of prayer the "manager" at the home shop said that he agreed that the mechanic at the satellite shop had no buisness trying to reassemble my case and that it should have been sent to the rebuild shop from the get go. Long story short they agreed to install an OEM chain from the dealership and reassemble the case for $250. The chain cost $175 and he said he will give me a copy of the receipt from the dealer. So all in all it will only cost me $75 labor. I think I can live with that.

Guess who has two thumbs and a functional t-case? This guy! Just finished bolting it up and climbing every hill in the yard. Thanks freegdr and everyone else for the advise and input. This fat kid is gonna hit the trails down by the river tomorrow!
