Default Np242 replacement

Hey guys,

I am having to replace my 2001 XJ's NP242 transfercase due to a damaged housing. I was wondering what year NP242's I could swap in. A lot of the ones available in my area have been the older type that has a housing over the output shaft, logic tells me these wouldn't work maybe due to a difference on driveshafts.

Thanks for the help.

Honestly I have no clue. Bought the Jeep in rough condition (no interior electronics worked at all, ac clutch bearing shot, valve cover leaking, etc) I took it for a spin after finally replacing my ac clutch bearing, broke the back end loose on some mud and proceeded to drive forward and instantly heard a grinding coming from under the Jeep. Inspected it the next day and to my surprise all my u-joints were good. Took the driveshafts loose and when I spun the shaft to get at the bolts on the yoke I heard the worst grinding coming from the transfer case. Decided to pull it for inspection, went to drain the fluid and nothing came out. Took the case loose and BAM giant hole on top of the planetary gear.

i have a 96 and was about to go get a np242 from a 98, i'd be interested in knowing if it's doable or not

from what i gathered in 97 they changed something in the shaft (not splines), so if you get a 92-96 one you'd have to swap the shaft over to the other t-case and everything should work. if you get one from 98-01, it should be a direct swap

Alright I did some digging and it looks like the Transfer case from a 97 - 99 ZJ will work if it had the 4.0. This should be 23 spline and have the proper length input shaft.
