Default NSS Issues on a 86 Pioneer Command Trac, pls help!

Hey everyone!!

I am having a few issues with my 86 pioneer turning over and I came here to maybe get a few suggestions and some help. I am freshly new to both this forum and fixing up my jeep. My dad and I have been working on little things here and there but this is my first “bigger” fix on my own.

I am able to turn it over by crossing the starter
but not from the ignition. I have reverse lights and putting the car in and out of reverse/neutral has not changed anything. I have power in everything else, headlights etc. I had been having a few issues starting it up over the past couple months, but I assumed it was a battery issue until yesterday when it refused to start after work.

I would love any and all recommendations you all would have for me. This car is my baby and I hate seeing it sit. Thank you all!!!

Does it crank in neutral? Does running the shifter back and forth a few times help? A 1986 doesn't have the AW4 transmission, but rather the A904 3-speed.

Its time to learn how to use a meter and test the switch. Test the neutral switch, ignition switch, and starter relay to see where the problem is.

Editted - Realized the 86 has a different trans, and very different looking NSS.

How to test the switch with a meter, or you can just ground the center pin and see if it cranks.

So you have a "no crank" when using the key. If you cross connect the posts on the starter, it will crank. If you have the key ON when you do this will it start and run?

When you turn the ley to start, do you hear any click? Even a slight one?

Default Thank you!!

Thank you all for all your suggestions!!

It won’t turn over in neutral and shifting in and doesn’t change anything. There is not even a slight click when turning it over either. Today I am testing the switches with the meter to see what comes up. If it is the NSS, I have only been able to find videos and parts for 87 and on. If you know of any information if I do have to replace it, I would love the help!!

Thank you again for your help!

Can you located the starter relay? It should look something like this (perhaps in a different orientation).

Looks like the part number for your NSS is J3232844

So the '87 doesn't apply. Looks like it's not serviceable.

Lawsoncl provided links to test and purchase if needed.

Okay update:

Today I tested my started relay and I have no issues with the continuity in the starter or ignition, and I had over 12 on the ground. I am going to attempt to replace the NSS. THANK YOU for sending the part number and where I can order it. I REALLY appreciate all your help. As always if any of you have any tips on the installation or the 3 prong nss, they are always welcome!!

I would first locate the switch, pull the connector off check that the center pin is grounded when in park/neutral. You can also ground the center pin on the wiring harness and see if it starts to confirm the switch is bad. That would also let you visually confirm yours looks like the picture.

*Im a test-before-replace kinda guy. I've been burned by cheap after market parts so I'm reluctant to replace oem parts unless I know they're actually bad.
