Is the knock sensor even needed? And the bare ground wire wasn't ho.oked to anything.

Knock sensor is probably the best feature of the Renix system.

CTS is the oval 2 wire connector. The connector that looks like an injector connector is the knock sensor.

Yes. They're pretty generic. Try Napa or O'Reilly's.

Looking at your pic in post #13 makes me think maybe I was in the right track earlier. The heater for the 02 sensor might be the only wire down there that might be able to short and roast there. I mean the only one carrying any real power. Looks like you have it there, and it is indeed fried. You may do well to split the loom and trace it back, it may have melted into others. ..... (or maybe I'm on the wrong track again!). I don't know that it has a fuse..... (it may well make sense to take a look at the fan of five or so fusable links, off your start relay, see if any look burnt). So see in this pic....the three wire 02 plug is flat, and the heater wire is on one end. (ground is middle, and 5V ECU feed is the other end)

. That, and it works reliably enough for aircraft. (without a nag-light!)

Yesser!^ OK. In the pic in post #14....that looks like an EV-1 connector, with the broken off end of the knock sensor stuck on it. If you look at your fuel injectors you will see the same connector. They can be hard to get off which is likely why it's broken.

ALSO see that foil around the wire? I wonder if that is the "shield" mentioned in that diagram. Maybe that bare wire is the ground for the shield.

So...One thing at a time. Find the 3 for the 02 sensor, the pair for the Coolant temp Sensor, and the pair for the Knock sensor. If there is an 8'th wire, let's guess that is what that is, a ground for the foil shield on the knock sensor wires. It's new to me and Cruiser, but is is indeed in the wiring diagram, and if you have 8 wires there there is not much else it could be. Plus an odd ground like that could be uninsulated.

For the 02 sensor, middle black is ground, Orange is the 02 heater, (best to check that for 12V with it running), and the grey is the 5V feed from the ECU. It's a flat three wire connector. The colors on the pig-tale of the new sensor might not match, that's OK. The first, forward relay in that row of 4 by the battery is for the 02 heater.

Then again, the Knock sensor, Violet/white, and yellow black, then the coolant Temp sensor Tan, with the Brown/white stripe ground.

So again, if there are eight, you likely have that ground from the injector grounds to that foil shield on your knock sensor wires.

Sorry for being redundant, but that above might sort of cover it all.....

Yessir DFlinstone. I work with and ex Kia mechanic so when I got here tonight he called one of his Jeep mechanic friends who confirmed all of what all of you guys have said. The bare wire goes inside the shielding to help prevent induced junk on the knock sensor. he said by no means go without it. I didnt realize I had broken it until just now. I guess a trip to NAPA is in order. I have pulled the wire loom all the way back to the fuel rail because it is rotten. Thansk for the info guys

And again in the last pic, that may well be the broken off CTS in that socket. You might just get those broken ends out, clean every thing up and be good to go...

I just looked on Rock Auto. A knock sensor is $57. Im going to pull a part today for a seat cushion. Would u trust a knock sensor from there?

Cool! I've learned a s-load researching things like that here. My Renix runs like a Swiss watch, just passed 277K today. If it ever breaks down I should be ready to deal with it! 12 years of bumpy gravel....something should break someday.....I guess....
