ha nokidding.. thats an intresting tid bit on the laws, i'll look up that statute.

it is the rail system. and i've located all the plugs for the 4 o2's. on the third pic, that third sensor is supposed to be a post cat (i think, going by how the harness is set up). that would explain the miss firing too right? the complete lack of one rear o2 and the other one sending signals that are the same as the pre cat. does this logic make sense??

The list of things that could cause a miss is a long one. Myself, I think I would get the 02 sensors and the light & codes dealt with, then deal with the miss.

Easily said! Eh? The p158...that sensor can't show over 5V unless it's wire is contact something hotter, and it happens to run with the 12V 02 heater wire. Not something I personally have dealt with, but that particular code might be somewhat specific.

In the 90's the two sensors have 4 wires if I'm not mistaken. Hot, ground, a 5V feed from the PCM, and a 4th "sensor" to the PCM that actually caries the reading. So three of those are easy to check at the plug. Assuming yours are 4 wire, that's something you might want to get familiar with.

WTF !!!! I did it again!!! Text is gone!!! Grrrrrr.

anyway the 161 might be hearer power goen to sensor wire. can platinum plugs if you havem' plugs/cap rotor/wires/ vac leaks. clean Iac & TB

O2 sensors will not cause a misfire.

Check with the dealer - VIN - it will tell you what engine and system is SUPPOSED TO BE IN IT.
Hopefully it's the right one. Then all you need to do is get the right cats and exhaust system.
After that, address the misfire.

BTW - the coil rail/DIS system HAS TO HAVE the copper plugs the underhood label calls out, or DOUBLE TIPPED PLATINUM PLUGS.

YES, it does make a huge difference.

NEVER BOSCH!

Get a Factory Service Manual - they are available for cheap on CD's on EBAY - well worth the small investment.

more info for ya'll.

got ahold of a better obd scanner. im throwing a crap ton of codes. gonna be fun.
going to custom fab an exhaust manifold using a new one for a 96'. going to split the two banks of it and fab in the mini cats from a 98 wj with its y-pipe feeding out to the final cat before the muffler. that puts me back to as close to stock as possible while not having to spend a $$$$$$. after that i have to chase down a leak in my evap sysytem and fix the check engine light.

let me know what ya think and wish me luck. any other ideas are welcome of course.

What I think is you have a bunch of work! Just a note,,,guys have used those spark plug anti foulers somehow to fab bungs. I don't know what's available.

I know I'd rather find something that bolts up. I assume that manifold is steel...you are aware welding cast iron is a challenge even for pros...I guess.

Good luck!

yeah definitely steel, cast has air pockets that explode on you lol. not fun.

i was actually able to get ahold of pre-made weld-in bungs for o2's which is waayyy easier. the anti foulers for the older fords are the ones that fit i think... ive heard that too! thanks for reminding me!

Well,...A guy posted that his threads in his rear were buggered up. I suggested he try a plug chase, and he came back and posted, "thanks, that worked". Anyway it sounds like you know what you are doing. If I did it I'd probably end up finding something expanded or contracted enough to crack something. If I had stainless bellows, I wouldn't have anything here that would touch that...unless I laid it on the battery!

nice! and i'd like to think so.. it took this thread, cross referencing countless diagrams, a LOT of talks with mechanics, and a trip to a sweet Jeep scrap yard we have here in the phoenix area to come up with this plan of attack.. all of us still have crossed fingers lol

The chronology makes it look like Jeep gave up the XJ when it got to that point. You have at it! I'm still figuring out the Renix. Good luck, let us know,

Holy Crap! Finally it passed emissions! thought i would bring it back up on this thread. I have to replace my injectors still but let me tell ya, the exhaust was NOT the only problem i found while exploring for an answer. Custom Fab on the headers and Y-pipe so i could still use the 96' head (the 01' head has REALLY small ports and the manifold is made of cast) had to cram the cats up inside there, fab flanges, new sensors and the whole nine... also found that the air intake port on the top of the head was replaced with a faulty PCV valve.. so NO air was getting inside the head.. i had MULTIPLE evap leaks that i had to chase down.. my NSS was bypassed all funky like and left with bare wires.. AND my cam sensor was spliced and left bare.. needless to say, all of those are fixed now. hopefully nothing else pops up to bite me. here are pics of the exhaust
