Default o2 sensor in the wrong position?

So this past December I got a code for bank 2 catalyst below threshold and I looked at the o2 sensor first. I can't remember what the code was. I looked at the o2 sensors on bank 2 and saw one of the wires for the downstream sensor was broken. So naturally, I figured that was the problem and bought a bank 2 downstream sensor. NTK of course. Replaced it and the light went out on its own for a couple days. After it came back on I went and had the code read again. This time it's P0432. Same bank. So, I went to look for an upstream one. Here's where I think I made a mistake. When I bought the first one I searched Amazon for "2000 XJ bank 2 downstream o2 sensor" and bought the NTK one that came up. I made sure it was for the vehicle and all that, it even said downstream in the description. The part number I bought was 23506. But apparently, according to Rock Auto, that is the part number for the upstream sensor and the downstream sensor part number is 23099. If you do a search for the 23506 part number on Amazon now it will say upstream. So I'm guessing that I put an upstream sensor in the downstream position? And could this be whats throwing the CEL still? I know it seems dumb if you read it but I went with what the description of the part said.

I believe the connectors are different so you can't mix them up. Upstream vs. downstream that is. Upstream connectors are Grey and downstream connectors are Black. And I believe the pigtails are different lengths as well.

At any rate, here's the NTK part numbers and positions.

I'm gonna have to take another look. Nonetheless, Amazon has me confused on what part number they actually gave me. I was also thinking that the connectors were position specific also.

I'm starting to think those vendors on Amazon are just as bad as Autozone.

I use Rockauto for my NTK Oxygen Sensors. Of course, you have to know the part numbers before ordering from anywhere.

The NTK/NGK website will give you the part numbers you need for your Jeep. That's where I got the NTK part number thingy I put in that pic.

I can confirm that. I replaced my upstream and downstream at the same time and noticed that they were slightly different. They have slots and tabs in different places so that they can't fit together.

I replaced all 4 sensors in my 2000 a few months ago and within days it threw a CEL...P0432. From my research, it seems this is not uncommon. People say that as the vehicle ages and the sensors get lazy, they lose the ability to tell that the cats aren't functioning properly. When replaced, the new ones pick up the problem and you get the light. Fix = new pre cats.

I haven't replaced them yet because it looks like a pain in the neck.

Makes sense. Neither of my upstream sensor have been changed yet. (At least by me.) I did notice that bank 1 upstream has been spliced into. Not sure why, but the previous owner told me about having to replace it before. Looks like he didn't do a very good job if he had to splice all the wires going to it. (Not even sure WHY that would've needed to be done unless when he was removing it he didn't have the correct tool.)

See that's where it confuses me on what part I actually got from Amazon. The one I put in went in no problem. Same connector and key way to fit so it would have had to been the correct one. I'm guessing just a mislabeled part.

Was the splice above or below the connector? If it was on the sensor side of the connector, it *may* (or may not) have been a generic O2 sensor. Some of the local parts stores sell generic sensors that don't have a stock connector on them. Instead you have to cut the connector off your old O2 sensor and splice it onto the new one. Some of them have these really stupid screw-together splices that aren't worth the plastic they're made of, and sometimes people will just skip those and splice the wires directly.

Or it could be some other repair attempt. Just a thought.

It's almost at the connector side. Maybe 4 inches below it. All 4 wires have been spliced into and electrical taped over. I'm gonna replace it regardless cause it looks shade tree as hell.
