My odometer has gone out on my 96 xj. It had went out while I was on the highway. Does anybody know what might have went wrong? and is this a fix I can do myself or should I take it into a shop?

If it's electronic it could be wiring or the plastic gear stripped out. If it has a cable then the cable could be broken.

No it's not electronic. Is the cable something I can check for with out taking apart the dash?

Even though my odometer isn't electric can it still possibly be a fuse? I'm not entirely sure how it works

I don't see how that could be a fuse.

motoman said he had the same problem, and said it was a fuse issue. I thought that my odometer was primarily just made up of gears? I remember pulling a write up about it a while back and it claimed that there is a small gear that is likely to fail at some point. Maybe I should look into this? I just want to know if there are any shortcuts to peak at before I dismantle everything.

yeah, just look at the tcase and find where the cable enters (on the driver side top) the tcase pull the bolt. 13 mm I think and look at the gear.
