Default Odometer problem

I thought my '91 limited 4.0l was getting bad gas mileage, but yesterday I had to drive to Lake Tahoe and back. I wrote down the mileage when I filled up before I left. I got there and back in less than one tank. My mechanical odometer showed I only drove 120 miles. Google maps showed it at over 370 miles. I noticed that the odometer just stops every now and then. Then it starts working. The speedometer consistently shows the correct MPH. I checked it with my GPS. If the speedometer works and the odometer is sporatic, would that be the gauge and not the connection to the transfer case? I would like to fix this so I can track my mileage better.
Thank for any help.

if it doesn't affect your speedo needle, then i would say yes, it would most likely be in your odometer itself.
not hard to swap out without swapping the whole cluster, unless of course you have dummy lights and want gauges...

I have gauges. I won't buy a vehicle without them. So would I have to get a cluster and just swap the odometer? Or is the odometer it's own part?

So I would get the whole speedometer / odometer gauge?
