I know this is an old thread but for anyone looking for a OEM radio for a 97-01 XJ I found three Dodge Dakotas at my local Picknpull that had compatible radios. One was a 97 and the other two were 98s. Those fall under the 2nd Gen Dakotas that were built from 97-04. I’m not sure when the wiring and radios changed within that range. I looked at a 2004 Dakota, and that radio had rounded edges similar to my stock 06 Wrangler radio. So all I can say from my experience is, a 97-98 Dakota has a PnP radio that will work in the 97-01 XJ.
