Im glad this thread resurfaced. Would just like to report that the motorad unit I listed pages back works flawlessly now. No fluctuations. In traffic and at stop lights, temps stay just below the 210 mark and may drop slightly as my e-fan conversion cycles on and off. Cruising, it stays at about roughly 185-190. Very pleased.

RockAuto. Not the failsafe version. High flow. I listed Part # somewhere in this thread.
Current stat is stock temp (197?) and holds those cruising temps with ambient temps of about 75° F. My efan conversion utilizes a BMW thermoswitch that cuts on just before 200°.

Otherwise, everything runs happily. I won't tempt it.

As quickly as coolant is being circulated at cruising speed, coolant temp should be pretty well balanced throughout the block/head......virtually no difference back to front of head. I would think in 75 ambient, coolant temp would be slightly above the stat temp rating. Sounds like all is good though.

Looking at your pics, the only thing that can be verified, is that the stat did open. Do u know at what temp it began to open? Do u know at what temp it was fully open? A stat is not exposed to boiling water inside the motor. Verifying the open temp, the smoothness of operation and wide open temp is just as important, if not more so, than just knowing it opens.

Yes, I know. I verified all the temp stuff, just didn't know if that was open all the way. The thin black (burnt looking) wire in the pic is a thermocouple. It started opening about 92c and was fully open by 100c. Sorry for the deg C, that's what my meter reads. But doing the conversion, it seems about right.
