Oh, great! Another thing to fix on mine. I'm sure my filter points up.

I'll try to get measurements. I can also try to fit one of the bigger filters to my parts 96 next time I visit him. The adapters look the same to me? Mines just covered in a lot more oil lol. Does your adapter have the torx bolt holding it in? I believe mine does.

Definitely something wrong. My oil filter points toward the rear of the vehicle and there’s nothing it can touch between it and the firewall, or maybe the bell housing. I have plenty room for a full sized filter like the WIX mentioned or Motocraft FL1A.

Seems you adaptor is rotated. The nipple the filter screws on to should be pointed at the gap between the console and the passenger seat.

Removing the OF adaptor is definitely not a solution. A stock filter can be attached at the same location where the adaptor attaches to the block, but the filter will hit the frame rail when the motor does any torque twist, and it doesn’t take much twist at all. The adaptor is on the engine block for that reason,

block to adaptor is 90mm (3-5/8")

adaptor effective length, including torx fastener head 50mm (2")

space between block and filter is over 25mm (1")

That is a Ford Z9 filter, much longer than an XJ, mine all point directly back

I tried a Wix filter on mine screwed directly into the block and it was very close to the motor mount. Like 1/16" or so. A smaller one works, but that's not very good. Anyway, it didn't cure my pressure problem either. What's weird is both my ZJ and my WJ don't seem to have the oil pressure problems the XJ does. Why is that? They are both the same engines using the same oil pump. The WJ reads pressure on the lifter gallery and the ZJ and XJ read directly off the pump. I DO know that if you run an oil cooler, the idle pressure on the XJ stays up. That's verified by many rock crawling trail rigs.

Thank you awg, I'll try to get the same measurements today.

Dave, you've got a ZJ too?!?

My first jeep was a POS 97 ZJ. I had it a year before the rear LCAs broke out of the frame. I had them welded, but the front uppers looked sick. It became a farm truck.

I believe my measurements are the same. Looking at it in the sunlight I can see better but it’s gonna be very hard to explain without showing you guys what I’m talking about. It’s hard to see, definitely hard to get a picture, with all the A/C stuff in the way. I drew a picture to try and convey what I’m saying. So the block where the adapter mounts is already at an angle pointing down and then the filter is pointed pretty heavily downward. So if you all are saying yours points straight back than there’s my issue. Great, a hard task just got harder

So the last pic above your drawing shows me your adapter IS the same as mine. And my filter adapter and filter both point straight back. Filter actually looks level with the engine when viewed from above. So the only thing I can think of right off is that the roll pin isn't in the alignment hole if that's possible or as dave1123 pointed out it may be missing all together. Not really a hard task to fix. The job of o-ring replacement isn't as bad as some suggest. Replace the roll pin or make sure it's in the alignment hole when it's reassembled. I removed the wheel and starter when I did mine. More room and more light.
Got to thinking that if your adapter isn't leaking why not just loosen it and rotate it until the filter sitting level and has proper clearance and retighten it?

Sorry doublechaz I missed your post. The Renix engines had an adapter that positioned the filter vertically.

I believe they also had a metric thread filter, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe that was just before 91, IDK. Even so, it's easily fixed by installing a later adapter. Or is it just the stud?

I pulled that roll pin out with vise-grips. I had the dimensions of it, but that was a while ago and the post-it note I wrote it on seems to have disappeared. Anyhow, I think it was 1&1/2" long and bottoms out at the right distance. The adapter has a groove molded into it that fits over the pin to keep it straight.

Thank you all for the input! I'm just glad I know what the issue is, or at least a good idea, and that it can be fixed.
I do believe the adapter is leaking and I have the new seals but I'm not planning on doing them until next oil change. Valve cover gasket is first.
