the filter should be parallel with the block in 2 dimensions...ie not pointing up or down, in or out

It appears from your pic that your filter adaptor has been rotated slightly anti clockwise..ie, no roll pin

WHOA!!!!! I never thought of writing the date and mileage on my filter!!!! I'm that guy who looks at the odometer and says "Yeah, I think its about time for an oil change IIRC......"
I remember how many miles the XJ had when I got it last August, so its not that hard to keep track of right now. And I've changed it once already and only put 2500 miles on it since I got the thing... I think..... I should keep better track of that.
I also have a sample I took from the oil that came out when I bought it.... I just need to stop being lazy and send it off the Blackstone... Then I'll send a sample of the T5 that's in there now when it comes time for a change...

I drive my jeep hard in that it runs every other day for at the very least over 3, sometimes 4 hours in stop&go service. That works out to 20K/year which includes normal chores and trips. I change my oil at 5K intervals and doing that, it's easy to keep track of. Plus my WJs overhead console reminds me. My new engine was installed at 252K, so I changed the oil at 253K, and 255K. Now it's on the 5K regimen. I changed it last week at 260K and it now has 500 miles on it from there. What also helps is I keep a newspaper route mileage log every day I do it. Last year I got $.53/mile that I can deduct from my income for taxes.

What I'm saying is it's not that hard to keep track of your oil changes if you care. It's the oil change industry that has everyone doing it at 3000. 5000 isn't doing any harm to your engine as long as you're driving it long enough to not form sludge. Rotella could very well run 10K, but I'm not there yet. I only run Rotella in my XJ because of the oil pressure thing. It's hard to write on a Wix filter anyway.

An amusing point. I bought my 67 SS Camaro new, and the factory recommendation for oil changes was 4000 miles and change the filter every 8000! 67 was the last year Chevy had the cartridge/can type filter. 68 was the first spin-on.

I have some older vehicles that dont see much use, so I dont change the oil, fluids & filters on all of them as often as recommended

So this is a fairly failsafe way of making sure things dont get out of hand

I try and keep my own maintenance logs to, at least one of my vehicles is quite old and has a very extensive maintenance record

that adds a lot of value, come time to buy or sell, at least in my eyes

RENIX OIL FILTER TO SAE FILTER

JANUARY 3, 2016 CRUISER54 9 COMMENTS EDITTired of having a poor selection of oil filters for your Renix Jeep? Limited availabilty a pain for you? 20mm threads? We don’t need mumblemeter threads on our oil filters.

Here’s a simple mod that allows you to use the very popular SAE threaded oil filters which are more readily available. The old standard 3/4″ SAE thread.

You can purchase a new oil filter nipple from the dealer for under $10 and never be bothered again. Part number 53007563AB. It’s the one on the left.

Or, grab one off a 91 and later XJ at the junkyard. Be forewarned though. You need a 7/8 wrench to remove a Renix nipple, but a 15/16 wrench for the later style.

And just in case you need to replace your oil filter adapter o-rings, here’s a handy guide.

Fleet vehicle maintenance guys do that all the time....I even heard the Air Force adopted that policy......

I never had the means to own a fleet of vehicles. I'd normally buy one new or 1 year old and drive it until I didn't want to fix it anymore or someone offered me a good price for it. After I got married, my wife drove the good car and I bought a beat up pickup and drove it until it died or the frame cracked. Chevy's were good for that. After she passed, that's when I started with jeeps. My first was a learning experience. It was a POS and I didn't know any better. My second, this WJ, was a garage queen and immaculate. My XJ is a POS bodywise, but perfect as a backup for the WJ when I need it. The guy wanted $700, but I talked him down to $450. 2000 with 125K on it.

I had a fleet of tow trucks. Always needing something. And, I maintained Budget trucks and a few other fleets. So, even with no records in the cab, you still had the date and mileage on the filters.

Oh, I'm not saying it's not a good idea. I'm just saying I have no need for it. Besides that, it's difficult to write on a black Wix filter!

the best thing is "Yellow marker paint"...or even a whiteout pen

many auto uses..I slathered my leaf spring bolts with coppeslip...not loctite, torqued them, and marked them...I know they havent moved as the yellow marks still line up

I wouldn't say fleet, but four is too many to keep track of by memory any more. Either that or age has made the memory worse.

Whatever...you're missing my point. By going to a 5K interval, all I have to do is look at the odometer. Which brings about a point. Do you think I could get away with 10K with Rotella T6? At 5K, it hasn't even changed color.

These days there are apps for it. I briefly contemplated writing my own (I'm a programmer by day), but then looked around and saw that CarFax has one that is usable. An added benefit (or liability, depending on your maintenance habits) is that what you put in there is on your CarFax report. That's what I use.

Are you using the free car care/my carfax garage? As far as I know, that doesn't go to the Carfax report.
