My understanding is that the pleated element material comes unglued from the cardboard end caps and collapses causing a blockage that the oil can't get through. The engine starves for oil and it's all over.

I just did the first oil change on my XJ
used total branded oil and filter
should have done it the day I got the poor thing
had a crack in the filter and only 2.5 letres of oil
Problem with New Zealand is to buy good stuff youve gota pay a huge premium
