Default OIL gauge reads 80 PSI ?????

just I have only 2.5 more months to go with the XJ before I get an '04 WJ.....

I changed the oil yesterday and right after I was done -- The Oil Gauge now reads 80 PSI ? and 70 when hot.. what gives?

Before I start it ~ as soon I turn the key the gauge races to 60+++psi
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Before the oil change :
It Was 45-50 when cold...to 20-30 when hot..

same oil and filter as before and for 70K.
10w30 Synthetic / Pure one filter

What could have caused the JUMP in PSI~ ???

You probably bumped the oil sending unit that is located right by the oil filter.

Yep - I bumped it

I checked the connection - seemed fine and solid...didn't get to check the other end - Where it connects to - looks like it connects to the starter?

But I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the connector off...

after pulling @ it for a 1/2 hour...went back it the Jeep and now the Engine light is on..I hate that light.

I checked the sending unit part # --- found 2 different ones PS317 and PS317T
does anyone know the difference and which part it actually is ? will either work?

thanks for the replies.

The electrical connector on the back of the sending unit should just pop off. You may need to use a screwdriver on the little plastic clip, which I seem to break ever time haha. The other end screw's in so that shouldn't be to hard to get off. So far as the part numbers I know that there are 2 different sending units one with one prong on the electrical connection end and one with 2 prongs. I'm not sure which one is correct for your jeep. Guess you won't know until you pull it off. The check engine light is probably on because your computer thinks that the oil pressure is much higher than it actually is, your check gauges light should be on too. Once you replace the sending unit it should turn off again.

Here is the piece that I use a screwdriver on, once you slide it over the connector should just pull off.

I suggest avoiding autozone for this one, and you want an oil pressure sending unit, not the switch. One of them has 2 prongs and the other has 1, as stated above. Just make sure the prong count matches up with your own before screwing it in.

Ditto - I got a replacement water temp sender for my full gauge cluster upgrade at the dealer for $22 so an oil pressure sender shouldn't break your bank... mines above 60 so I may be in the same boat as you guys.

What is the correct range for oil pressure from idling to highway rpm's anyway?

Ohh that looks like similar to the connector on my injectors. Those are really tricky because as you stated the red piece slides. You have to slide it back and pull the connector off. Its gonna be difficult because of the angle you have to go in at.
I tried to explain it with this pic but it's still kinda hard to understand.

Default update....

update....

I was ready to change out the sending unit....when the on the way home from work the water pump blew...

all gauges went crazy
- battery gauge fell to zero
- Oil gauge read 40-50 Normal.... the gauge fixed it's self..
- temp Gauge @ 210 Normal..
- gas gauge fell to half - was 3/4

the check gauges light came on, as well as engine light..

SO now I have a new water pump and a functioning OiL GAUGE WITH only 2 months to go before I switch to a WJ......I hope she holds together...

BUT I AM thinking she doesn't want to leave..and is starting to fight back..
