Oil leak???
#3
CF Veteran
I also have a '99 4.0L engine with an oil leak (167K miles). My first mistake was assuming that it was the rear main seal and then allowing a local shop to go at it (which led to more troubles - still not all resolved). It still leaks only worse now and, as usual, it drips from the lowest point such as the oil pan plug or the trans bell housing. I've read enough on this forum to believe that it is probably coming from the oil filter adapter. I'm about to replace the o-rings to the oil filter adapter today (cost under $5 at the dealer's parts counter). Waiting for the sun to climb higher and the temp to rise a little more...

One might think so but as you drive the oil gets everywhere. Even My tranny pan WAS always wet with oil. Now with new o-rings on the adaptor it's bone dry (engine and tranny pan).

leaking valve cover could also cause all the oil you are seeing. valve cover (aka rocker cover) seal and oil filter adaptor o-rings are the 2 most "popular" places to leak.

Well those 2 things I mentioned are parts of the engine and yes they are the 2 most likely to cause your oil leak(s).
It's possible the rocker cover bolts just needs to be tightened but if you don't have a torque wrench I hesitate to suggest that you tighten them. The torque values are very small and if over tightened you could distort the rocker cover. FWIW the torque values are
*RTV gasket 2.5 foot lbs*
*permanent gasket (rubber or cork) 4.5 foot lbs*

My 01 XJ had the same type of oil stains on the oil pan, turned out to be the valve cover....reach around to the back of the engine when it is cold and feel right below the valve cover, if you feel oil leaking down it is the valve cover.
