Default oil leak cllose to rms after head swap

Well ive always had a oil leak in this jeep and ive replaced valve cover gasket and oil adapter o rings and that's checking out clean. About 2 weeks ago I installed a reman head and everything seemed fine and just a couple of days ago I started smelling burning oil at red light and pulled over and checked it. Brought it home and degreased it and found oil leak at filter gasket, replace filter and started it up and let it idle for 15 min. no drops. But when I drive the jeep a couple miles its leaking from the rms area (more to the driver side) fresh oil.Is there a chance the head is leaking oil or is it the rms ? I used fel pro gaskets and used torque specs and sequence . Thanks for any advice. Heath

Leaks from the oil filter and the valve cover can, and will, get pushed back along the engine and then down through where the RMS is. It makes it appear that the RMS is leaking when it is not.

It may also be leaking though, and this can be caused by the CCV system not breathing properly, and the crankcase pressure will push oil out of the RMS.

You are going to have to get in there and investigate a bit more to know for sure. You'll be pretty upset if you go to change the RMS and find out later that it wasn't the problem to begin with...

I'll be upset if its the new head gasket leaking . Ive got it singled out to the back of the motor no leaks around the filter or sending unit.I also took a clean rag all the way around vc no signs and the back of the head and got alittle old cruded black oil but no fresh oil signs. Im starting to want to sell this maintenance nightmare.

The RMS isn't a nightmare to change in these, but it is still a bunch of work. Make sure that the CCV system is flowing before you change the RMS... If it isn't it will definitely push oil out of the RMS cus there is nowhere else for it to go...

...and I am totally with you in wanting to sell this heap of heep...but I have put so much flippin work into now that selling it would be like admitting defeat, and I'd just be doing more work on whatever else I would replace it with.

I love it though, so I am keeping the hoopdie! lol

LOL I love working on it don't get me wrong, its frustrating when its mostly the wife naggin when I got to get parts for it..well its not the ccv cause I just redone it about 6 months ago (new grouments and all,) except the back hard line that goes into the intake is broke in half. I just sleeved it with some rubber hose. I just got done checking it all out.

well after wiping, cleaning, poking, and running the engine it has a small leak at the adapter (ive changed o rings twice now ) and the best I can tell the oil pan is leaking in 2 or more spots. Im starting to wonder if its full syn mobil one that I switched to not even 1000 miles ago causing all this leakage.

That's probably it. Synthetic oil is better.. but switching to it from conventional in an older engine can make things very leaky. The thinner, slippier oil is more likely to get through old seals and the stronger detergents can remove deposits that were covering up leaks.

Personally, I've always used high quality 10w30 conventional in my Cherokees. Sometimes 5w30 for the winter. Neither one I've owned has leaked so much as a drop and these old tractor engines aren't picky about oil. I think they even like the heavier stuff.

The type of oil isn't causing the leaks.........

That's an old wives tale.

Where did you get the o-rings for the oil filter adapter?

Check the OFA for cracks/damage.

Cruiser has a good question.
Depending on where you get your oil filter adapter o-rings (change both), could cause a problem, get oem seals and redo.
Clean oil pan,slightly torque oil pan bolts,drive a while,recheck.
If still leaking, replace oil pan gasket and RMS with Fel-pro brand gaskets.

I don't think the type of oil causes any problems, moreso the act of switching to synthetic in an older engine. The better oil/detergents clean out old deposits that conventional can't, which is a good thing but can reveal leaks. In any case, the best thing to do would be to fix the leaks properly.
