Correct. Studies have confirmed that more Jeeps get fixed using eyes, hands and hand tools than with a keyboard, monitor, and mouse.

Forgot to ask a question about this. Are you using a cheap cork gasket or the good felpro one thats rubber and metal?

I believe the gasket on before was a rubber and it looked to be leaking and I just threw on the one autozone gave me. Which was cork. Felpro. Also I started it right up and it seems to be fine, haven't driven it yet. I'm waiting for some Bedliner to dry.

Drove it around a little bit and let it idle while I watched it like cruiser said, didn't notice it leaking at all. Cleaned it some more cause I did horrible the first time. If the gasket was off in anyway would it leak? I think some of it might not be in the right place. Ill see it sticking out in places and then I can't see it in other spots. Should you be able to see it all the way around? It's not leaking so should I just not worry? Also on the little elbows on top, the one on the front is missing the orifice part which is just the little hole, will this affect anything? It just goes to the air filter so I figured the only thing it would do is let more air in.

I've heard bad things about the cork gasket. Felpro makes them both but the rubber is known to last. Also heard of people being able to reuse the rubber one. Anyway, my rubber one does stick out a bit but there is no leaking.

I was in the same boat as your. I bought a 98 XJ Classic two weeks ago and I am completely new to jeeps. I thought I had a RMS leak too because my oil pan was completely covered in oil. Turns out it was my VCG and my oil drain bolt. Replaced the VCG last week and did a fresh oil change today with a new oil drain bolt. So far I have a leak free jeep. You'll learn a lot from the forum. I have much more to learn. Good Luck!

Really? Then why do they keep asking? How many questions have you asked me?

A little snap into reality and showing people how to diagnose their own Jeeps is bad? To me it's giving people tools to do their own work, build some knowledge base and confidence. Should I just sugar-coat it and give them uninformed stabs at what their problem "might" be. Too many people are already doing that IMHO. Let them get let astray and spend a bunch of money and time on conjecture and guessing instead of using their own God-given gifts to help themselves.? Is that better?

... Too funny! Might be a "generational issue". We older would go under and look, then find a book, maybe even in what they use to call a Library.

To find an oil leak, you clean it, then watch carefully before it's all over the place. If you can't do that, you won't find every leak. I wish I had your eyes!, (and you'd probably like my flashlight). Just can't be done with a keyboard. DO make sure the front vent is clear to vent. If it can't, crankcase pressure will make it pee all over.

Be nice!
