Default Oil overfill

I brought my 99 XJ into firestone today for new tires and they told me it had too much oil in it. They said it had seven quarts and was only supposed to have six. This seems consistent with what I found on the internet. My question is whether having driven around with 7 quarts over the last 6-7 months has harmed my engine. I plan to go back to Grease Monkey and have a conversation about this. If it may have harmed my engine, I am going to be livid.

Probably no harm if you didn't notice any issues. More than likely they didn't suck enough out. Some of the crappier places don't drain the pan and just stick a suction tube down the dipstick tube.

Naaah, I just wouldn't go back there anymore.
Esp shop that doesn't actually drain the old oil out.

If it's only 1 quart overfilled, the engine should tolerate that. Two plus quarts overfilled could be a different story.

I echo the sentiment of never using that original shop that overfilled again. If they can't get a basic oil change right, how would they handle something more complex....

confirm it is really oil, An over rich fuel mixture can cause fuel to build up in the oil. if oil smells of fuel, then that is a problem.

Yep, 6 qts per FSM. Did they (Firestone) drain/replace the oil?

Initially, a lady there said they would only do an oil change (full synthetic, so over $100) which I didn't need, and would not drain the extra quart. Later, someone else said they would drain the 7 gallons and put 6 back in, which I really appreciate, considering I am already spending $1400 there (new tires, belt). Maybe I'll start going there for oil changes now considering I won't be going to grease monkey anymore.

You said "gallons" but I read quarts.

I was only wondering if they determined it was 7 by measuring what they drained or by the high mark on the dipstick.

No matter now as they are taking care of it, Just double check it when you get it back.

The shop I used to use before I started doing all my own work put in a couple engines per month to fix the screwups of the quick change oil joint at the other end of the block. Every month. Month after month. For years. Pretty well all of those people switched to getting their oil changed at his shop and never had any further problems.

I'm not saying it's aliens, but.....

The only experience I've had with too much oil was with a friends vw Passat.. He put two quarts in too much and drove it for a few weeks until he started experiencing a bunch of leaks. I blew out his rear main seal and other gaskets and ended up having to re gasket the engine
