jeep states that anything above 13psi at idle is good, but really between 20-40 is good. on the street my jeep sits at 35-40 when i beat the **** out of it offroad, then it reads between 20-30

If you're worried, check the oil pressure with a manual test gauge from a parts store. Could be as simple as a faulty sending unit. Here's an interesting read:

Oil pressure spec for the 4.0 is as follows:
*Not less than 13 psi at HOT idle
*Between 37-75 psi OVER 1600 rpms
If you are in this range, you are fine.

not trying to jack this or anything like that but does anyone have an issue with there oil pressure dropping everytime they hit the brakes mine does it all the time now and when it drops it hits zero then the check guages light comes on. but as soon as i hit the gas it shoots back up and the guage light goes out.

This oil thing is still weird for me 'cuz back in 98 my dad bought a brand new jeep grand cherokee in Brazil and I remember the oil pressure on his was 40 all the time.
I just got here in Canada my first grand cherokee it's 2000 and when I turn the car ON the pressure goes to 50 after awhile drops to 40 (right in the middle) however when I'm driving goes up to 50-60.
But as tjwalker said I guess I'm in the safe zone eh?
Is it better to be high or low?

Only way to know gor sure is to check with a mechanical gauge that you can rent/borrow from the parts store. Oil pressure fluctuates with RPM. 13 psi at idle is okay. It seems that the later Cherokees had a much higher failure rate of sending units than the early ones FWIW.
