Default oil pressure gauge concern

Yesterday while driving my OPG maxed out to 80, stayed there for less than a minute then went back to 50. It is the second or third time I noticed it do that, should I be concerned?

The main cause of spiking oil pressure is the pressure sending unit is on it's way out Or you have crude stuck in it. It isn't much to be concerned with if you know that you do have good pressure.

I had my sender explode, which in turn emptied the sum in a shockingly quick time, spend a few dollars and fit a new one for piece of mind

Also check the wires to the connection at the oil sender and make sure they are still insulated and in good condition.

I agree with both, check wiring and if it is good replace sending unit.

Mine started doing that about a year ago. The first thing I did was unplug it to check the wiring. The inside of the plug had oil on it (somehow getting past the sensor)
I put a new sensor on, and problem solved.

My oil pressure gauge is a bit nuts also. At idle it jumps around some, but at speed it settles down to around 45-50 PSI, which I suppose is an OK pressure (?)
Haven't checked it much except to look the connector over, which seems OK. Might just replace the sender anyway, as a matter of "principle"
