ok i will be taking it to a mechanice to check that pressure but in the mean time i changed the sending unit and it seems be holding the pressure. I am going to put in some 15w 40 and i'll change out that filter too. i thin my CAT is shot too or its the bearings in the motor LOL who knows thanks everyone.

that's like mistaking a firework exploding for a cows moo... they are both noise.. but completely different sounding lol
A main bearing failure and a bad cat sound NOTHING alike.. If the op is unable to diagnose his own oil pressure.. I doubt a mechanics stethoscope is in his near future..

Hmmm.
- 2001 XJ
- No oil pressure (maybe)
- Excessive noise from engine (maybe)
How's your coolant level dude?
Sending units die more often than heads crack, and FAR more often than oil pumps. Definitely verify the pressure. BTW it the oil pump was shot to the point of zero pressure you'd see a dry valvetrain.

i have 235000 miles on my 01 XJ i put a new oil pump in around 120000 miles. Oil pressure is dropping to zero when I stop at a light and when i'm running its just over 20. Do i need to rebuild my engine or do you think its the oil pump again? i do here some slight rattling type noises. any help would be appreciated.
thanks
thanks
If the answer is no your engine is probably just tired. Is this bad....not necessarily, your engine could still last a very long time. My 2000 has had zero pressure at idle and 20 at highway speed for years.

Yes, 3-1/2 years ago. 1st time I screwed a mechanical gage into oil sender port. 2nd time I extended the gage line so I could put the gage in the cab. Sometimes gage dips to near zero. 15-40 wt has improved it to 4 psi. That was well over 40,000 miles ago. OEM dash gage still reads zero though. Motor is quiet (for a 4.0) and runs smooth and strong.

The problem is for newcomers who see your post saying your 2000 has had zero at idle when it actually isn't zero but "near zero" and up to 4 psi. I know you've posted this before and every one (except newbies) knows your Jeep isn't running on zero oil pressure but why say so?
