Default Oil Pump Drive Shaft Issues

Hey 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport owner and new to posting on the forms. Everything was running great since getting the Jeep until recently I was trying to track down a leak (of course)and noticed that my oil pump drive shaft wobbles and oil leaking out the top. I am getting low pressure on the gauges at idle once the engine warms up, I will be checking with mechanical gauge tomorrow.

Was wondering if this is can be fixed with a new shaft assembly or will the pump have to be replaced too?

The distributor shaft is what drives the oil pump.

From what I’ve read the 00-01s don’t have the typical distributer you see on the older ones. According to the service manual, on the 00 the cam position sensor sits on top of a shaft that syncs the cam and also drives the fuel pump.

But what would cause this assembly to wobble? Bad assembly/o-rings? Loose bolt on the pump mount? The clamp holding it down is tight. Ill take a picture of the area for you.

Sorry, no dizzy. But doesn't the cam position sensor have a shaft with a tang on the end to drive the oil pump and a gear on that shaft to get driven by the cam gear?

Have you removed it? A pic would be great.

When you say the "Assembly" is wobbling, are you saying the "Cam position assembly" is wobbling?? there is a clamp that holds it down (just like a distributor). Really no way for it to wobble when clamp is tight.

I tightened down the clamp and the wobble didn’t really change. My next step is to remove the sensor and shaft to inspect it when I have the time!

Sounds like a worn bushing. If it didnt wobble id say all you need is a gasket. Probably need one of those anyway.

The 99 and older used a distributor, while the 00-01 used a "Camshaft Syncronizer". Thats what Chrysler calls it. We know what you mean saying distributor, but if you ever need to replace either, the guy or gal at the parts store might not know the difference and order the wrong part.
