I would not drive 311 miles with no power steering fluid.

Your going to burn up your pump or worse seize it.

Find your leak and go from there.

No your pump and then your serpentine belt will probably break.

Find your leak, if it's in the hose, cut it out and add a piece of pipe that fits inside than add 2 hose clamps.

First you have to see where the leak actually is.

Agreed. Spinning a pump with no fluid in it? It won't last long.

what if I kept adding fluid?

I'm going to look for the leak tomorrow while adding more fluid and can hopefully do it. I've got till Friday around 12 to fix it!

If you find the leak and it happens to be a split in a section of hose that's able to be spliced into one of these style connectors could be a cheap and easy temporary solution.

Yeeeaaah don't drive it that far with a serious P/S leak. The bonus rust proofing of sprayed oil is nice but you'd be out a P/S pump. And driving a vehicle designed without power steering isn't the same as driving one that was designed like that then suddenly broke. Without P/S there are a billion turns of the wheel to go from lock to lock.

What these guys are saying for hose repair is good. If the leak is in a fitting though not much splicing will get at it. I'd try some gasket maker (RTV silicone) on the leaky fitting and then once it's set wrap the mess tightly with tape to keep the pressure in. A glob of RTV alone could just get blown off again. Make sure to totally clean the area first so any RTV actually sticks. Then top off the fluid and go!

well, I'm getting it towed back home. $450 from a local shop vs. my insurance that was going to charge me $800. I'm not an auto mechanic so it's safer this way.
thank you to everyone who posted and assisted with information!

my next thread will be about me selling my Jeep
any takers?

the shops within 100 miles of me are booked till late October; I called 23. Plus being in western North Dakota, shops charge an arm and a leg. Guy wanted $100 to tow it 4 miles plus $80 just to inspect it.

I'll be paying a little more but it's "peace of mind" too.

cause = effect, probably not, it's just coincidence. So you have power steering and cruise control now?
