Okay, what's the deal with thermostats?
Seems like no parts book on the interwebz lists
Is this the right one for 1996 4.0L I6 Cherokee XJ?
Genuine Chrysler 52028186AC Thermostat">Genuine Chrysler 52028186AC Thermostat" /> Genuine Chrysler 52028186AC Thermostat">Genuine Chrysler 52028186AC Thermostat
as good for 1996 4.0L XJ or earlier. Is this the right one for 1996 4.0L I6 Cherokee XJ?

The brand should be MOPAR, and the country of origin should not be China.
You'll be paying $30 for the same thermostat you can get from a chain parts store.

Well I can see why you are frustrated.
So I am coming up with this out of my '94 to '96 catalog.
83501426 PACKAGE, Thermostat
52028446 180 Degree, Severe Use
53006320 GASKET
I have assume the first one is the 195 degree.
Also they don't list the thermostat separately. That is the thermostat and gasket part number supposedly.
But they do list the gasket separately.
https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts...tat-83501426ad
The part number you posted is the one in my '00 parts catalog but with no letters at the end.
And it says it does not fit a '96.

I always assumed that they were all the same.
Now I don't know what to think.

No luck with that number with Amazon sellers.
This is getting as bad as relays, and crank case vents.

Your first link notes that it replaces a couple part numbers, not the one I posted, and the widget on the site says it fits my vehicle. I already have Fel-Pro spare gaskets, and the price there is better than most. Until you get to the shipping charge, which brings it right back in line with others.

I bought the cheapest one we had. I think part number was THM 269. I think it cost me less then $3 all those years ago.
Now I was not aware of the bad out of the box thermostat thing till later.
I think about 3 years ago I had to do a water pump. I decided to put in a new thermostat housing too.
I even bought a new Stant SuperStat.
With all the bad out of the box threads floating around in my head I decided to not use it and put back in the cheap Napa one.
Hey it still worked.
Now I am sure that I will pay for this mistake someday.
But it has been in there about 9 years so..... LOL.
When you say crank case vents are you talking about the CCV/PVC whatever the hell those are called in the valve cover?

Since they show the Max Cooling radiator in the '94 to '96 parts catalog you would think they would indicate the thermostat as such.
Best I can tell they only show the 180 thermostat in the '94 to '96 parts catalog.
I don't see it mentioned in any of my others.
Almost gives you the impression that they tried it for a bit, realized it was a mistake, and never did it again. LOL.

What in the hell does that insane statement have to do with whether or not a thermostat works? They're all made in the place that has the most qualified engineers (China) , the most tooling and infrastructure (China), the most labor (China) , and guess who decided how cheap the thermostat got made or QA'd? The Americans, that's who. Guess who let education, labor unions, and all aspects of manufacturing go overseas? The Americans.
Maybe there is a place in the off topic area to discuss economic systems like communism vs capitalism or pseudo state-run capitalism. RACISM and crazy posting about nuclear war, I'm not so sure. I've been on this forum for over ten years and I'm tired of reading about replacement parts, only to find insane hatred towards 1,408,000,000 people, instead of a legitimate talk about the quality of the parts, and why they suck.
Let's see how well it goes here for someone to talk S** like that about Israel and the quality of their automotive parts being connected to their ethnicity, politics, and religion.

This is extremely political and borderline (maybe literally) racist, warmongering, fearmongering, let alone factually just incorrect about China being purely "communist" and using "slaves". I respect Cruiser quite a bit but there should be no home for talk like this on cherokeeforum, I don't understand how a moderator lets this slip (because he agrees). Y'all need to get a grip and understanding about the state of manufacturing in the world and point your fingers at the country you live in and what you can do to see the change you desire.

No racism expressed, now go back to your red chinese master. As for your statement regarding chinese as the "most qualified engineers" this non red chinese engineer finds your statement about engineers RACIST.
