ok my uncle owns a junk yard. In it he has a older 4 cylinder jeep, ef 92 or before. Think its an auto. I looked under it seems to be a 35, didnt look to be the 44. Think it would have to have the 4:56 gears?

Listings vary-- mine came from the factory with 3:73 and 2.5 I had an 86 with a 2.8 which is a chevrolet sourced v6-- known to have a weak crank shaft, and 4:11 gears.

That's the problem with wikipedia, information is submitted by the general public and is often not verified before being published on the web. The Jeep Cherokee did not come with factory 4.56 gears.
Try these as well.

you don't have to even remove the dif cover to find out. Just put the car in neutral, and jack up the rear. Turn the rear wheel around one turn and count how many times the drive shaft turns. If it turns 3 1/2 times=3.54, just over 4 times=4.10, 4 1/2 times= 4.56
Quick and easy.

4.56 was an extremely rare factory option. Exact specs to get it are unknown, but it definitely had to be an automatic with I4. I suspect some combination of OHV, tow package, and/or UpCountry, but the required combination is unknown.

It was a rare gear option, but to be fair, his is the only 2.5 auto Jeep I've ever personally seen, it wouldn't surprise me if all the 2.5 autos got 4.56's. They need those low gears just to move, and his is still slower than my 2.5 5 speed on 33's with the stock 4.10's.

A buddy of mine just picked up an 88 XJ Pioneer with the 2.5 and auto. Equipped exactly the same as mine, except for the auto tranny, no tow package, no upcountry package, no power options, and he has factory 4.56's.

I have an 85 xj Pioneer with I4 3spd auto and factory 3.73s
Verified it when I had the cover off to change the fluid. There are numbers stamped on the ring and you divide them to get the ratio, check the reply in this thread for info

I haven't had this one on the road yet, still reviving it from the dead, but I know the original owner and no faster than he drove it I imagine it was ok for him lol. May need to change them once I get it on the road.
