so my drivers door, 99 2dr, is impossible to open by pulling the handle. i have to shove the door in then pull out real fast for it to open.. i know i cant be the only one as this is the 2nd xj ive had do it.

what can i do to fix

i have a broken hand currently so getting in is very annoying, and silly looking im sure

any help/ideas is appreciated.

Try spraying some penetrating oil in the door ,take the plastic plugs out so you can access the lock and stuff

 

The hinges may be sagging. You can adjust the striker and see if that helps, or you can adjust the rate the button moves the latch. In the door jamb you will see a slotted hole, there is an allen head screw in that hole. Loosen the screw and then push the button on the outer door handle in and slide your thumb off of it and allow the button to pop back. Do this a few times and tighten the screw. The latch should release a little sooner now.

 

The doors on the two door are very heavy. They have a tendency to tear the metal on the fender side of the hinges. Have you checked to see if that may be the case? There are some threads on here and other forums discussing how to fix this if it is the problem.

 

Yes checked hinges and sprayed oil. Tried all te common sense stuff..

Another note. My other Xj is a 4dr and does the same thing.

My guess is the little button isn't actually moving anything. Or at least not very well. You should take off the door panel and inspect what you see. Its probably just seized up a bit and needs lubricated.

 

Well the button has to be workin or it wouldn't open right?. If I don't press it and push then pull it stays shut like it should. But when I press it and push/pull it'll open.

Trunk does it intermittently. But the door is Everytime and its really annoying. I messed with the latch today a bit. Freed it up some.. Not much. Gonna keep workin at it. But I'm stuck at the DMV waiting to get titled right now. The Allen bolt has been bent a bit and I cant work an Allen wrench into there. So for now it's just cleaner and lubing sprays. And working back n forth.

 

Well i just deal with it cause its the trunk but yea in your situation just lube it up and see if everythings lined up properly

 

It's all lined up. Workin a bit better now. But still got a ways to go..

Now I'm trying to figure out why my piaa's won't work. I have power all the way to bulbs. And good grounds.
