Take valve cover off and run engine. See if you see the push rods moving the rockers. I had a problem with one cylinder not firing-it was the exhaust valve being kept closed. The push rod had come out from under the rocker arm and it wouldn't open. Easy fix. I had compression on all cylinders though. You might have a valve stuck open.

If it's a valve spring, your valve being open wouldn't allow the air/fuel mixture to be compressed enough to fire. You would still have spark though on the plug. Do you have that?

If the valve spring is cocked it would hold the valve open. It shouldn't have an affect on the other cylinders.

You say you have the head off now?

If so, take a look at all the piston tops and the cylinder walls (with the pistons at the bottom of their stroke).

What does the head gasket look like? Blown between cylinders?

Remove all the valve springs and let the valves slip down enough to examine the valve seats. Examine the valve guide clearance with the valve stem seas remove..see if you can wiggle the valve stems back and forth in the valve guides. Correct clearance is .001 to .003 ".

If the valves look okay, replace all the valve springs and valve stem seals. Valve springs up to '98 or '99 were bad. Chrysler came out with a TSB to replace them. Bad springs are even showing up in the 2000 and 2001 4.0's.
