Open is when you only have power to 1 wheel. Hence the name 1 wheel wonder. Locker, both wheels have power. Its better for offroading. There are selectable lockers which you choose to be locked or open and lockers that are always locked (lunch box) like one I have but they're harsh on the street if they're lunch box lockers.

That's not exactly true. Open differentials send power to both wheel equally, if both wheels have full traction. When one wheel starts to slip (or is in the air), all of the power goes to that wheel.

A limited slip uses friction packs or clutches so that if one wheel is slipping, the other wheel can still get some power.

A locked differential sends equal power to both wheels at all times (while locked).

You can buy lockers for your differentials through any 4x4 off road parts retailer.

I don't think u fully understand how a "lunch box" auto locker works......or maybe yours is not functioning correctly. Lunch box auto lockers r not always locked. They unlock (differentiate) automatically in a turn (especially on pavement) and lock when both axles return to the same speed.

We have a PowerTrax No-Slip auto locker in our XJ and it is almost as invisible as a LSD. 4 1/2 years later we r still seeing those 2 black marks and that big ol' grin in the rear view mirror.

^ I just got a Powertrax No-Slip for my Chrysler 8.25 rear end, so I'm glad to hear it has good street manners!

watch this vid on how lunchbox lockers work.. this is the
Lock right lunchbox locker. All lunchbox lockers like Assuie, Loka, Lock right act this way.

Excellent lunch box auto locker video. We opted for the PowerTrax No-Slip version of the Richmond Gear auto locker due to being a little more sophisticated (a little higher price as well). The No-Slip is totally silent in a turn.....zero, zip, nada ratcheting noise/sound when differentiating (unlocked).
