Default Operation RESTORE LIFE

Ok folks. Here it goes. I am starting with a 2000 Classic. If anyone has read my posts before then you will already know what is going on. I have the dreaded 0331 head that decided to crack, and cause all kinds of stuff.
We are going with a replacement head. Haven't found it yet but I am actively looking.
I have been reading the forums and it looks like what I am looking for is the head from a 2002+ wrangler that has the TUPY marking on it. So my search begins.
See you all at the next post...

www.car-part.com or www.alabamacylinderhead.com or www.clearwatercylinderhead.com the first link, you will have to have it checked out/machined by a machine shop.

I know some late 2002 Grands had them, I looked at a 2002 with a 9/02 build date it had it, I was talking to the original owner they said they had never replaced the head, tend to believe it, as they had all service records/reciepts from day one.

So I started the tear down this morning. Valve cover off, P/S pump removed from the head. Looks like new injectors are in my future. These look like a bag o'***. Started unbolting the intake. I got all the top bolts out and now I assume I have to go fishing for some other ones between the intake and exhaust. I was not blessed with small hands so this is going to bu fun.
Any suggestions on how to get to them, or is my intake just really that stuck on?

Also noticed there is a manifold bolt either missing of sheered off in the head. Wont actually know until I can get the manifolds off.

Until next time

I took the head all the way off lats night. After about an hour of inspection I could not locate a crack anywhere in the head. I am sure it is there but I just couldn't find it. The coolant passages were pretty clogged up with gunk. Looks like the dealership, or even perhaps the previous owner used HEADSEALER in a can to make this issue go away. I know I didnt use it so I can only assume at this point. Next will be the really fun part of getting the lifters out and checking to see if there is any damage to the camshaft. Not that I am against replacing the cam...I just really dont want to. I thing a long block would come into play long before I tear down to the cam. I see there is a lifter tool available as well as seeing the technique for using a magnetic retrevial tool. Next stop will be a complete lower half inspection to see if there is any other damage.

Place the head so that the cylinder bowls are facing up and the valves are shut and then fill the bowls with pb wd40 anything that wont evaporate or mess up your head and check the fluid levels and if you notice one going down more then the rest you found best place to start looking at closer for crack

Here are some pictures to show you what I found. Now I am not sure if I have a head crack or if it was just this head gasket. "When in doubt...change them out"

Im also a bit concerned about the "rusty" gunk in the coolant passages.

So I guess the good news is I do not have a cracked head. I tipped the head upsidown and filled the bowls with wd40. I let them sit overnight with some absorbant white cloth under them. No sign ood wd40 anywhere except in the bowls where I left it. This is a good sign for me. Now to do some clean up and start the reassembly process. But before reassembly I am thinking the injectors could us a little love. Time to check the classified section and see who has the upgrades for sale.

Never worked in a machine shop without a dye kit...most would use this method I think. Quick, easy, idiot proof...if a guy follows the directions anyways.
