how does this effect driving or MPG? It just looks like it would be less efficient then a no snorkal setup, but nice setup either way! (only asking cuz I wanna do it! lol)

It beats having the intake below the headlight where the chances of sucking in water are much higher. The tip of the snorkel is 6" above the hood so I think it's good.

It has no effect on driving and I haven't done any mpg calculations but it seems the same. It's a bit more peppy though, considering it's getting more air, and COOL air.

Very nice writeup Mudd, I may just have to do this one myself. It scares the crap out of me having my intake sucking right from behind the headlight, plus I'm always finding chunks of mud in the bottom of my airbox, this may just be the cure!

Yeah my airbox was wet the first time I took the jeep out. It's just not a good place for the airbox opening if you wheel the jeep. There are also little holes on the fender around the air box that allows mud and water to splash up up on the air box.

That spot somewhere on the front is where virtually every vehicle takes in air. It is the accepted place. But those engineers don't wheel, and they built the XJ for the soccer mom market.

Yeah station wagons.

The TJ's intake is in the same spot, but the actual intake tube bends up facing the hood so it's a little bit better than the xj's.

I used 3" hose and pvc. The pvc fittings are 90 degree.

I am looking to replace the ducting hose with rubber hose but I can't seem to find any. If anyone knows of a place to get 3" rubber flex hose, let me know.

why do ya wanna do that? rubber in heated compartment...besides the ducting hose is meant for air, if you think about dryers

The aftermarket snorkels come with rubber flex hose. The duct hose I have now works, yes but dents easily and doesn't keep it's shape. The rubber hose would look better instead of the shiny ducting hose.

We had a set of these dark black kitchen plates, cups, and cereal bowls. The cereal bowl had a square sense to it, sorta like the xj's boxy body so I used that. It was also a near perfect color match too LOL. I have a hummer type cap (round) to use but haven't gotten around to painting it black. It's white with a big sticker on it.
